Literal Translation
⚫ Is a word-to-word translation.
⚫ Also known as Metaphrase.
⚫ Does not take care of the idiomatic usage of complex
and compound verbs, phrases and idioms.
⚫ The method of translation in which the sense is carried
forward to the target language is called Paraphrase.
⚫ For example, let us consider a few examples of
translation from English to Bisaya and English to
Tagalog.
1. It is raining cats and dogs.
⚫ Metaphrase [literal/word-to-word translation]
⚫ Bisaya: Nag-ulanugmgairingugiro.
⚫ Tagalog:Umuulan ng mgapusa at aso.
