Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Today, technology becomes part of every life and every day, students tries to invent
something for convenience and for the good of humanity. However, students doesn’t see the
negative sides of those inventions because we focus on how to earn. One of the most popular
and common technologies nowadays that everyone is using is the computer. Computers have
become a social and economic necessity that permeates every part of our life. Therefore,
necessary precaution must be taken in exploring all the uses of computers and the negative
consequences of using them on a daily basis. Computer games are a one way to ease our
boredom, but sometimes it leads to addiction because of lack of self-discipline. Computer
game addiction is a worrying aspect of the modern-day technologically able youth. Many
students spend hours a day on computers, so much so that computers have become a primary
source of entertainment for them and because of that, they forget the role of being a student.

A computer game is a computer-controlled game where players interact with objects

displayed on a screen for the sake of entertainment. A video game is essentially the same
form of entertainment, but refers not only to games played on a personal computer, but also
to games run by a console or arcade machine. There are many types pf computer games like
card games, board games, puzzles, maze, fighting, action, adventure, role playing, strategy,
sports, simulation games and many more.
Nowadays, more and more people are starting to use the Internet. At the same time, online
games or computer games have become extremely popular among the young generation thus
leading to the proliferation of online game addiction on a global platform. Many students are
spending too much time on computer games rather than spending time to their school works
or to their academic performance. Online games is used to feed an addiction, which by its
very definition interferes with daily life, work and personal relationships and also, according
to a report of Syracuse University on the Science Daily website, online games may have
significantly negative consequences, especially in the lives of students, through causing
distraction and interfering with important reaction of out-game life actions, such as academic
performance, health and social life. Many cases have been reported in which users play
online games compulsively, isolating themselves from social contact and focusing almost
entirely on in-game achievements rather than out-game life events such as academia,
socializing with family and friends, or sports. Out-game life should spend times on academia,
communicate with family members and sport etc. But game players see the in-game life as
more important than out-game life. This means they spent almost all the time to play online
game or computer game. As education however, despite those inherent advantages, the
internet also has its draw backs. Although the internet could be very productive it can have
drastically opposing effects from some people who play online games the internet act as an
enabler. Internet is one of the greatest creations and provides people with instant access to an
endless supply of knowledge and entertainment.
Statement of the Problem

The study will focus on explaining the Impacts of Computer Game Addiction to the Physical and
Mental Health Guidance School Students. The researchers will seek to answer the following
questions

1. To what extent does Computer Game Addiction affects the Physical and Mental Health of
students?

2. How these computer games affects the students in their studies?

3. What can be suggested to educate the students about the impacts of computer games?

Significance of the Study

In this study show that playing too much computer games causes physical damages and increases
anxiety and depression in players. Many studies show that most students who are addicted to
computer games have high heart beat and anger issues due to too much excitement and stress.
The result of the study showed that online game has negative effect to academic performance of
students. Study revealed that online gaming has a huge impact among them regarding on their
academic performance which led them to poor or low grade and physical distress as well.
Scope and Limitation of the Study

In terms of focusing in major subject, some students are having a feeling of tension.
Apprehension, or fear that interferes with major subjects. As a result of this, computer games will
also affect teachers. We would like to have in our objective that teacher should utilize teaching
methods that capitalize on the importance of major subjects such as mathematics, help students to
develop their analytical skills and increase their self-efficacy beliefs. Although extensive studies
have been done on educational computer games around the world and it is important to have a
wide gap that still exist in studies focusing on the effective ness of computer games in children’s
learning of a certain subjects in schools.

Definition of Terms

In this research, it is to aim an investigation about the effectiveness of computer-based game in

facilitating children’s learning in major subjects in school. To achieve this aim, there are two
objectives which the study seeks to fulfill:

1.. To determine the difference between computer games and learning

2. To determine the effectiveness of computer games in student’s acquisition of analytical skills

with regards to handling major subjects in school.
