LAB REPORT CHM 420
EXPERIMENT 1 : IDENTIFICATION OF A COMPOUND

 Objective  To identify a compound on the basis of its chemical properties.

 To determine identity of given unknown compounds based on their
chemical properties.
 Introduction 1. Students will conduct a chemical reaction using test reagent and
known compound then they will observe the chemical changes that
are characteristic of various compound. This experiment will
perform under controlled conditions.
2. Based on the observation that using known compound, students
are able to predicts the identifies of some given ‘unknown’
solution. During this experiment, a precipitate may be appear,
change in colour of the solution may occur and exothermic or
endothermic reaction make take place.
 Chemical & Known solutions :
Apparatus  0.2 M NaCl
 0.2 M Na2CO3
 0.2 M MgSO4
 0.2 M NH4Cl

Unknown solutions :
 Solution 1
 Solution 2
 Solution 3
 Solution 4

Test Reagents :
 0.2 M AgNO3 (aq)
 0.2 M NaOH (aq)
 0.2 M HCl (aq)
 Method A. Observations of chemical properties of known compound

1. Four clean test tubes were labeled.

2. 3 drops of each of the four known solutions were added into
labeled tests tubes.
3. Silver nitrate test reagent was added into the solution.
4. The observation was recorded on the datasheet.
5. Step 1 to step 5 were repeated using another test reagents.

B. Chemical properties of unknown compound

1. Just follow the method for Experiment A but replace the known
solutions with unknown solutions.
2. Compared the observations with experiment using known
solutions to identify the unknown solutions.
 Questions Question 1

 a) A reagent that distinguish the chemical properties of Mg2+ and

Na+ is NH3 (aq) because when Mg2+ dissolved in NH3 (aq), the
white precipitate formed.
 b) A reagent that distinguish the chemical properties of Mg2+ and
Ag+ is HCl (aq) because when Ag+ dissolved in HCl (aq), the
white precipitate formed.
 c) A reagent that distinguish between the chemical properties of
Cu2+ and Ba2+ is NH3 (aq) because when Cu2+ dissolved in NH3
(aq), blue precipitate formed.
 d) A reagent that distinguish between the chemical properties of
Ba2+ and Cu2+ is H2SO4 (aq) because when Ba2+ dissolved in H2SO4
(aq), white precipitate formed.
 e) A reagent that distinguish between the chemical properties of
HCl and H2SO4 is Ba2+ because the mixture of the H2SO4 and Ba2+
will produce white precipitate.

Question 2

Test 2
 H2SO4 + K2CO3 K2SO4 + CO2 + H2O
 Discussion Based on theory :
 When AgNO3 is added to NaCl, the AgCl will be observed in the
form of white precipitate.
 When AgNO3 is added to Na2CO3, the Ag2CO3 will be observed in
the form of yellow precipitate.
 When AgNO3 is added to MgSO4, the Ag2SO4 will be observed in
the form of light blue precipitate.
 When AgNO3 is added to NH4Cl, the AgCl will be observed in the
form of light yellow precipitate.
Error :
 The solutions and the reagents were prepared by lab assistant and
not by the students themselves so the solutions may be
contaminated if it is not prepared correctly.
Safety :
 HCl is an acid so is a corrosive. As a safety, students may use
gloves when carry out this experiment.
Suggestion :
 Students have to carry out this experiments without having a
limitation of time and facilities so that students are able to carry
out perfect experiment.
 Students also can repeat the experiment to have correct result as
the theory.
 Conclusion  AgNO3 + NaCl NaNO3 + AgCl
 AgNO3 + Na2CO3 NaNO3 + Ag2CO3
 AgNO3 + MgSO4 Mg(NO3)2 + Ag2SO4
 AgNO3 + NH4Cl NH4NO3 + AgCl

CHEMICAL EQUATION :

1) Using AgNO3

 AgNO3 + NaCl NaNO3 + AgCl

 AgNO3 + Na2CO3 NaNO3 + Ag2CO3
 AgNO3 + MgSO4 Mg(NO3)2 + Ag2SO4
 AgNO3 + NH4Cl NH4NO3 + AgCl
