2
Title

An investigation into the Effects of smoking on the Respiratory System.

3
Statement of Problem

Smoking is observed to be a prevalent issue among teenagers, particularly in school X. This has
inspired the researchers to conduct an experiment in order to investigate the effects of smoking
among teenagers, notably those aged 14 to 17; Identifying which age group has the highest
percentage of teens that smoke or have previously smoked.

4
Objectives

 To determine the effects of smoking on teenagers between the ages fourteen and
seventeen years old in school X.
 Investigate the population in school X that is engaged in smoking.
 To identify which age group has the highest percentage of teens that smoke or have
previously smoked.

5
Background

Smoking is the act of inhaling and exhaling the fumes of burning plant materials (e.g., tobacco
and marijuana) in a cigarette, cigar, or pipe is smoking (Hilton, 2021). Many teenagers smoke
because of peer pressure, curiosity, or social acceptance (Scalar, 2021). Materials like tobacco
may relieve stress and provide pleasure, but can also cause lung disease, cancer immune system
problems, etc. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020).

This topic was selected because smoking was observed to be a prominent societal issue among
teenagers. The aim of this research is to investigate the effects of smoking, so that the awareness
raising recommendations could be made to help lower the act and preserve health.

Methodology
A questionnaire is a research tool used to conduct surveys. It includes specific questions to
understand a topic from the respondent’s point of view (Amaresan, 2021). Questionnaires
provide a relatively cheap, quick, and efficient way of obtaining large amounts of information
from a large sample of people (McLeod, 2018). However one limitation of questionnaires is that
they lack detail because the responses are fixed, there is less scope for respondents to supply
answers which reflect their true feeling on a topic (McLeod, 2018).

The research was conducted at School X. There were approximately students between the ages
of 14-17. A sample size of twenty-five respondents was then selected by Random Sampling
since it allows for an equal chance of selection.
