POSITION PAPER

Currently, I am a Civil Engineering student and personally, I agree to the notion

that chemistry plays a vital role in the field of engineering. Naturally, in terms of civil
engineering, civil engineers’ main role is to supervise and maintain infrastructure
projects. However, civil engineers cannot construct any building if there is no materials
available for them to use. Nowadays, one of the main material in construction is the
cement and chemistry plays a vital role in the discovery of these material and it’s
potential in the construction industry.

I know that in our current society chemists are underappreciated, despite of their
ground-breaking discoveries that contributed to different fields, especially in the
engineering field. Personally, I consider chemistry and those individuals who practice
it as a great contributor for what the humanity has achieved for the past century. They
are the ones who is responsible for the rapid advancement of our technology by their
discovery of nanomaterials. These nanomaterials are very important in the
engineering field because it opens new chapter for construction and it help us realize
that there are so many things that we can do with these materials. For instance, in
civil engineering, nanotechnology can be use to create self-cleaning or self-healing
concrete thus increasing its lifespan and a great decrease in maintenance cost. There
are numerous materials used in construction and all of these materials are chemicals,
therefore chemistry has something to do with it, because after all chemistry is
everywhere.

Civil Engineers are builders, however without chemistry the discovery of

materials that is essential in construction will not be possible. So, as a conclusion,
chemistry plays a vital role in every engineering field that is why before someone
became an engineer he/she has to take first a certain number of subjects that has a
connection with chemistry.
