Rising and lowering the voice are common to a person when speaking and this is
what we called Intonation.

Intonation
means the rising and lowering of the voice when speaking. the sound changes
produced by the rise and fall of the voice when speaking, especially when this has an
effect on the meaning of what is said.

When we are raising our voice, we called it Rising Intonation.

Rising Intonation- means the pitch of the voice rises over time.
We use rising intonation with:
 Yes/no questions
 Offers
 Enumerations

We tend to use this rising intonation pattern when we’re asking questions. So, the
pitch of our voice tends to go up. When you hear rising intonation, it indicates that the
speaker is waiting for a reply just like in this example.

When does the meeting start?

Would you like a cup of tea?
Really? That’s wonderful!
That’s great!

Falling Intonation- means that the pitch falls with time.” We use falling intonation
with:

 Statements
 WH-questions
 Commands
 Exclamations
 Alternative questions

F. Application:
Read these sentences carefully then identify the intonation used by checking the
appropriate column. Number 1 is done for you.
Assessment:

Determine if the sentence is Rising Intonation or Falling Intonation. Write RI if the

sentence is in Rising Intonation and FI if the sentence is Falling Intonation.
