Advantages and disadvantages of Population based study and sample based study :

Population Based Study:

Population study is an interdisciplinary field of scientific study that uses various statistical methods
and models to analyse, determine, address, and predict population challenges and trends from data collected
through various data collection methods such as population census, registration method, sampling, and some
other systems of data sources.

Sample Based Study :

A sample is defined as a smaller set of data that a researcher chooses or selects from a larger population
by using a pre-defined selection method.

ADVANTAGES OF POPULATION BASED STUDIES:

● Establish population based incidence

● Accurate relative risk
● Temporal relative risk
● Time to event analysis possible
● Used when randomisation not possible
● Reduces biases (Selection, Information)
● Can study multiple outcomes.

DISADVANTAGES OF POPULATION BASED STUDIES:

● Lengthy and costly

● May require very large samples
● Not suitable for rare/latency diseases
● Unexpected environmental changes
● Non response, migration and loss to follow up
● Sampling, ascertainment and observer biases
● Changes over time in staff/methods

ADVANTAGES OF SAMPLE BASED STUDY :

● Less expense of sampling

● Less tedious in sampling
● Extent of sampling is high
● Association of comfort
● Accuracy of data is high
● Intensive data

DISADVANTAGES OF SAMPLE BASED STUDY:

● Chances of predisposition
● Alterability of units
● Inconceivability of examining
● Troubles in choosing a really delegated test.
