Introductory Message

For the learner:


Welcome to the Arts 7 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Arts and Crafts
of Luzon (Highlands and Lowlands).

Do you love art? Have you ever dreamed of becoming an artist? Art has been a part
of our lives for as long as humanity has existed. For thousands of years, people have
been creating, looking, criticizing, and enjoying art. I would like to address three
questions: what is art, what is its purpose, and why has it survived for this long.

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. It will enable you to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

learned concepts.

The following are some reminders in using this module:

1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the
module. Use your MAPEH activity notebook (big notebook) in answering the
written tasks. For activities like drawing, designing, etc., use bond papers in
doing the tasks of which later be made into portfolio. While some outputs that
require creative skill like mat and ball weaving, flower and collage making,
etc., should be done and be included in your submission.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other activities
included in the module. Please answer the questions HONESTLY! Your
answers will not affect your grade.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.

What I Need to Know

In this module, you will understand more about the elements and principles of
arts found in highlands and lowlands artifacts in Luzon. This will help you learn
more of the processes in arts and its application.

This module will help you appreciate the beauty of the representative folk arts
and crafts from Luzon that will lead you to the discovery of one’s talent in
creating and designing.

After going through this module, you are expected to incorporate the design,
form, and spirit of the highland/lowland artifact and object in one’s creation.

Specifically, you are expected to:

1. gain knowledge in designing an artwork;


2. demonstrate creativity in making soap carving and tattoo designing;
3. appreciate the designs of the highland/lowland artifact and object in one’s
creation.

What is It

Let us visit and enjoy the


beauty of Luzon’s arts and
crafts that incorporate the
elements and principles of
art.

Visual Arts may have no words, yet they have the power to communicate
feelings, moods and ideas thru the elements of art like: lines, shapes, forms,
colors, value, texture and space. Also, we discussed on the principles of art such
as balance, contrast, emphasis, pattern, movement, rhythm and unity/variety.

In the next lesson, the elements and principles of art can also be found in the arts
and crafts of Luzon (Highlands).

ARTS AND CRAFTS OF LUZON (Highlands and Lowlands)

HIGHLANDS OF LUZON:

A. ILOCOS

Some of the arts and crafts of Ilocos include


pottery and textile weaving. Burnay is a pottery
which is an unglazed earthen jars with small
opening using the principles of shape and texture. Burnay
Inabel is a hand weaving technique of the Ilocanos
that is produced using traditional wooden looms.
The inabel designs are inspired by natural
elements: patterns, colors, and lines.

B. KALINGA

Basketry of the Kalinga shows their fine


craftsmanship. The designs in their crafts include
the use of elements such as forms, shape, pattern,
and balance.

LOWLANDS OF LUZON:

A. BATANGAS

Batangas is famous for producing embroidered


piña fabric, made from the fibers of pineapple and
woven into a costly fabric. These are used for piña
barong, wedding gowns and other formal attires. The
elements of arts present in the design are forms, Piña Barong
pattern, balance, and texture.

B. LAGUNA

Laguna is a lakeside province rich in natural


resources and fertile soil for farming. Paete, one of the
provinces in Laguna, is famous in for their
woodcarving and is considered as the “Woodcarving
Capital of the Philippines”. They also produced wood
panels with decorative carvings of floral patterns and

florid geometric designs.
The materials, techniques, and the symbols used in the arts and
crafts of every province have their own cultural and traditional
significances.

Now, it’s time for you to learn how


to make Luzon’s arts and crafts.

Activity 2: Soap Carving

Directions: Prepare the materials needed. Then, follow the procedure below.

Materials Needed:

 Soap
 Pencil
 Paper, Paper clip
 Scissors, Plastic butter knife
 Paintbrush

Procedure:

1. Place a bar of soap on a sheet of paper and trace its outline.


2. Within the outline on the paper, draw your own design of any of the arts
and crafts of Luzon (Lowlands).

3. Place the design on the bar of soap. Then, use a pencil to lightly carve the
outline of your design into the soap.
4. Use a plastic knife to remove large chunks of the soap and a paper clip to
shave off smaller pieces.
5. When you finish shaping the sculpture, use a pencil to carve details.
6. Brush away any soap dust with a paintbrush. Check out your soap
carving.
7. Take a picture of yourself holding the finished product. Paste it in your
MAPEH activity notebook.

chosen that certain design for your soap carving?
