POST TENSIONING
This is a method of prestressing concrete in which concreting is done first then tendons are
tensioned against hardened concrete. In this method the stresses are transferred by end
anchorages but not by the bond. In this method any shape of cable profile can be provided.
Losses are less compared to pre tensioning methods. Post tensioning is suitable for long
spans like members in bridges, flyovers etc..
Mainly there are four methods of post tensioning
1. Freyssinet system
2. Magnel Blaton system
3. Gifford-Udall system
4. Lee-McCall system
This method is used to prestress steel bars. The diameter of the bar is between 12
and 28mm. bars provided with threads at the ends are inserted in the performed ducts.
After stretching the bars to the required length, they are tightened using nuts against
bearing plates provided at the end sections of the member. This system has the advantage
over others that stressing can be done by stages as it is possible to tighten the nut at any
stage.
