AT 6501 – Automotive Transmission

1. What are the essential properties required for a clutch facing material and how
these are met with in common materials ?

2. List out the requirements of transmission system.

3. Discuss overdrives used in automobiles.

4. Define-Automatic transmission system.

5. List the major components of hydraulic control system in automatic transmission.

6. State the advantages of epicyclic gear box.

7. What are the functions of CVT ?

8. Discuss the need for automatic transmission.

9. What is meant by conventional transmission ?

10. Give the disadvantages of Electronic Controlled Transmission.

11. a) i) With a neat sketch, explain the construction and working of diaphragm
type clutch. (8)
ii) Discuss the need of synchronizer and explain its working with a simple
sketch. (5)

b) A motor car engine develops maximum torque at 2000 rpm and maximum
power at 3500 rpm. if the bottom gear ratio is 4 : 1; find the approximate
ratios of speed for a gear box having 4 forward speeds when the ratios are in
geometrical progression.
If the same car at top gear has speeds of near about 50 km/h and 80 km/h at
the corresponding engine speeds at maximum torque and maximum power
respectively and the effective diameter of the driving wheels is 0.6 m, find a
suitable back axle ratio. (13)

12. a) Explain the principle of operation of hydrodynamic torque converter with a


polar diagram.
