I. Graphic method
II. Method of group averages
III. Method of moments
IV. Principle of least square.
Out of above four methods, we will only discuss and study here principle of least
square.
Least Square Method
Least Square Method (LSM) is a mathematical procedure for finding the curve of
best fit to a given set of data points.
The method of least squares helps us to find the values of unknowns a and b in such
a way that the following two conditions are satisfied:
Method of Least Squares can be used for establishing linear as well as non-linear
relationships.
𝑛 ∑ 𝑋𝑌− ∑ 𝑋 ∑ 𝑌
𝑏= and 𝑎 = 𝑌̅ -b𝑋̅
𝑛 ∑ 𝑋 2 −(∑ 𝑋)2
Example: Find the least square line y=a+bx for the data:
x –2 –1 0 1 2
y 1 2 3 3 4
Solution:
X Y 𝑿𝟐 XY
–2 1 4 –2
–1 2 1 –2
0 3 0 0
1 3 1 3
2 4 4 8
∑ 𝑿=0 ∑ 𝒀=13 𝟐 ∑ 𝑿Y=7
∑ 𝑿 =10
13 = 5𝑎 + 𝑏. (0)………………(3)
7 = 𝑎. (0) + 10𝑏……………….(4)
solving 3 & 4 simultaneously
13
from eq. 3 we get, 13 = 5𝑎 or 𝑎 = 5
=2.6
7
from eq. 4 we get, 7 = 10𝑏 or b= 10
=0.7
x: 1 2 3 4 5
y: 3 4 5 6 8
Ans: straight line is y = 1.6 + 1.2x
Example:
By the method of least squares, find a straight line that best fits the
following data points.
Fitting a second degree parabola: 𝒀 = 𝒂 + 𝒃𝑿 + 𝒄𝑿𝟐
