A REPORT ON
MACHINE TOOL:
SHAPER

A REPORT ON MACHINE TOOL: SHAPER
AIM: To study the working principle, specifications, advantages and disadvantages of the
shaper.
WORKING PRINCIPLE:
 The single point cutting tool is held in ram by a shaper machine, and the workpiece is
positioned above the table.
 Metal is cut during the forward stroke, known as a cutting stroke, when the ram
holding the tool reciprocates over the workpiece.
 An idle stroke is one in which no metal is cut during the return stroke.
 At the conclusion of the cutting stroke, the feed is given.
 In most cases, the cutting stroke is executed slowly, while the idle stroke is executed
quickly with the aid of a quick return mechanism.
Quick Return Mechanism:
The Slider moves quickly and removes the material from the workpiece during the forward
stroke.
However, the Slider moves more quickly during the return stroke than during the forward
stroke, which means A return stroke is a quick return that occurs more quickly.

FIGURE: MACHINE TOOL SHAPER

SHAPING MACHINE SPECIFICATIONS:
Stroke length 18’’

Working surface of the table 407mm x 292mm

Maximum size of the tool shank 32mm x 16mm

Range of ram speeds stroke per minute 17,25,50,75

Motor capacity 1.5kW

Speed 960 rpm

Model SM 18’’

Make SAGAR

ADVANTAGES:
 The cost of the single point tool, or low tooling cost, is cheap.
 It has a distinct ending point for the cutting stroke.
 The shaper machinery can readily hold the work.
 The setup is quick and simple, and it is also simple to transition from one operation to
another.
DISADVANTAGES:
 It is a slow machine by nature because a single point cutting tool needs several strokes
to finish a job due to its straight-line forward and backward strokes.
 Due to the large inertia force created by the motion of the machine's units and
components, cutting speeds are typically not particularly high for reciprocating
motion.
CONCLUSION:
The working principle, advantages and disadvantages and specifications of the shaper has
been studied
