Prerequisites: Analog and Digital Communications.
 
Course Outcomes:At the end of the Course, the student will be able to:
CO1: Describe the Geography with reference to Satellite Orbits.
CO2: Illustrate the Satellite Subsystems and Link Design.
CO3: Categorize the Satellite Multiple Access Techniques and Earth Station Technology.
CO4: Outline the Various Applications of Satellite.
CO5: Illustrate the Basic Principles of Television.

UNIT- I 10 Lectures
INTRODUCTION TO SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS:
Principles and architecture of satellite Communication, Brief history of Satellite systems,
advantages, disadvantages, Applications and frequency bands used for satellite communication.
Kepler’s Laws, Newton’s Law, Orbital Parameters, Look Angle Determination, Orbital
Perturbations, Limits Of Visibility, Sub Satellite Point, Sun Transit Outage, Launching
Procedures, Launch Vehicles And Propulsion.

Learning outcomes: At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. discuss about Geostationary Orbits (L2)
2. summarize Launch procedures and Launch Vehicles (L2)
3. explain the concepts Visibility, Eclipse, Sub Satellite Point, Sun Transit Outage (L2)

UNIT-II 10 Lectures
SPACE SEGMENT AND SATELLITE LINK DESIGN:
Spacecraft Structure, Primary Power, Attitude and Orbit Control System, Telemetry, Tracking and
Command and Monitoring, Thermal Subsystem, Propulsion Subsystem, Communication Payload
and Support Subsystems
Basic transmission theory, System Noise temperature and G/T Ratio, Noise Figure and Noise
Temperature, Satellite Uplink and Downlink Analysis and Design, Link Budget, Design for
specified C/N.

Learning outcomes: At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. describe Spacecraft structure and orbit control system (L2)
2. explain Satellite Payload, Telemetry components and Tracking (L3)
3. illustrate satellite uplink and downlink design (L3)

UNIT-III 12 Lectures
SATELLITE ACCESS:
Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA), Intermodulation, Time Division Multiple Access
(TDMA), TDMA Frame Structure, Demand Access Multiple Access (DAMA), Random Access,
Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), Spread Spectrum Transmission and Reception,
Comparison of Multiple Access Techniques
EARTH SEGMENT:
Earth Station Technology—Transmitter and Receiver, Terrestrial Interface, Antenna Systems,
Design considerations of Earth segment

Learning outcomes: At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. discuss about different Multiple accessing techniques (L2)
2. explain the concepts Terrestrial interface and Antenna system(L2)
3. illustrate the aspects of the earth station that affect the communication link (L3) 

UNIT-IV 8 Lectures
SATELLITE APPLICATIONS
Overview of VSAT Systems, Network architecture, Digital DBS TV, Block diagram of DBS-TV
Uplink earth station, Satellite Navigation and global Positioning system (GPS), GPS Position
Location Principle, GPS Receivers and Codes, Satellite Signal Acquisition, GPS C/A Code
Accuracy

Learning outcomes: At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. discuss about VSAT System and its Architecture (L2)
2. describe the concept of Digital DBS TV(L2)
3. illustrate the Satellite Navigation and Global Positioning System (L3)

UNIT-V 10 Lectures
PRINCIPLES OF TV & BROADCASTING
Gross Structure, Image Continuity, Scanning, Flicker, Interlaced Scanning, Number Of Scanning
Lines, Fine Structure, Tonal Gradation. Video Signal Dimensions, Horizontal Synchronization
Details, Vertical Synchronization Details, Scanning Sequence Details, Functions of Vertical Pulse
Train, Channel Bandwidth. Vestigial Sideband Transmission, Bandwidth Allocations for Colour
Transmission.

Learning outcomes: At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. describe the Basic Parameters of Television (L2)
2. explain the Horizontal and Vertical synchronization details (L2)
3. determine Channel Bandwidth and Bandwidth allocation for colour Transmission (L3)
