Tennis is one of the world's most widely-played sports, enjoyed by

players of all ages. It is also a popular spectator sport, with star players in
glamorous tournaments watched on TV by millions of fans all over the world.

Each player uses a racket (also spelled racquet) to hit a felt-covered ball

over a net into their opponent's side of a court. A player wins a point when
his or her opponent cannot return a shot, or the opponent's shot doesn't
land in the court.

This ancient game is still played to a limited degree and is usually called
real tennis in Britain, court tennis in the United States, and royal tennis in
Australia.

The modern tennis game is associated with England, and in

fact, it was this country that began to elevate this sport to new
audiences and make it as popular as it is today, being proof of this
the tournament of Wimbledon, which is the oldest Tournament of
the world, taking place in London from 1877. Tennis is currently an
Olympic sport, since 1988 in Seoul.
Playing regularly will burn calories, build muscles, improve
reflexes and benefit cardiovascular health. Regular exercise greatly
reduces your risk of heart disease. Playing outdoors you’ll enjoy
plenty of fresh air and sunshine.
Rackets can come very cheap, a set of tennis balls costs a few
pounds, and you can play for free on any park court. Even top
quality tennis rackets, used by professionals, cost under £150.
Tennis or sports clubs will charge an annual fee. Most clubs have
coaches happy to provide lessons for a price.
