AND CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE | LEVEL 2

Initiated in 1878 by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, the impressive

collection of life-size plaster casts proposes a journey through
nine centuries of the history of architecture. From the Moissac
abbey to Notre-Dame of Paris, from the François Ier staircase
in the Blois château to the Arc de Triomphe, the Gallery of Casts
invites visitors to discover the most famous civil and religious
monuments in France.

From Gustave Eiffel to Jean Nouvel, this gallery presents models, life-size
elements, photographs, archival films and printed material of a hundred
or so pioneering buildings in the history of architecture in France from 1850
to the present day. The thematic itinerary rolls out in two chapters:
through innovative projects such as those by Gustave Perret, Le Corbusier
and Dominique Perrault, Designing and Building tells the story of the actors
and edifices that revolutionized the art of building; Architecture and Society
offers a glimpse of the answers provided by architects and urban
planners to the social and cultural mutations of French society in the 19th
and 20th centuries.

A unique undertaking in Europe, brought together from 1937 on, the collection
of walls paintings extends the collection of casts and faithfully reproduces
to scale the major works of French mural art from the 11th to the 16th century
(the 15th-16th period is closed). These works offer a panorama of the history
of wall painting in France, its evolution and its regional characteristics.
Here, the gallery presents wall paintings from the Romanesque and
Gothic periods, through masterpieces such as the choir of the Nohant-Vic
church, the Tavant crypt, the Cahors cupola and paintings from Avignon
and Le Puy-en-Velay.
