Garment Industy Plant Layout

Clothing industry or garment industry deals with the types of trade and industry along the
production and value chain of clothing and garments, From textile sector (producers of cotton,
wool, fur, and synthetic fibre), elaboration by using embroidery, via the fashion industry to
apparel retailers up to trade with second-hand clothes and textile recycling
The fashion business is a product of the contemporary age and part of garment industry . Prior to
the mid-19th century, practically all clothing was produced for individuals, either as home
production or on order from dressmakers and tailors.
The garment industry consists of four levels: the production of raw materials, primarily fibers
and textiles and leather and fur; the creation of fashion items by designers, manufacturers,
contractors, and others; retail sales; and different types of advertising and marketing. These
levels comprise several independent but interrelated sectors, all of which are committed to
supplying consumer demand for clothes within conditions that permit players in the industry to
operate at a profit.
.
Experts disagree in perspectives on how and what defines a good layout. It is never simple to
grade one layout above the other when both accomplish the intended outcomes. But at times,
minor alterations yield miracles.

Plant layout is the arrangement and configuration of departments, work stations, machinery and
equipment used in the production process. An efficient and effective layout has the flexibility to
change so the requirements of the product line and delivery schedules will achieve . Fire and
safety codes, emergency and accessible exits, open traffic areas, etc. must all be considered.

Factors in planning a layout: for garment industry

 Low manufacturing cost.
 Feeding the materials and parts at greatest feasible speed and in one direction without any
backtracking or overlapping flow of products,
 Work transfer of the processes from acceptance of raw materials till delivery of finished
product will have properly defined spaces for each process
 Ready for future expansion plans.
 Number of employees both male and female, number of machines (size, weight by
models), entry, exit and passages

Plant layout for Garment Industry

 Create a scaled drawing of factory/shop floor
 Make a sample models of machines/equipments
 Draw fixed facilities/equipments

 Position the main flow process in a straight line regardless

of available space
 Place the main flow process in the available space

 Assigned the additional divisions in the remaining space

 Finalized the plant design based on completed machine layout
.

Factors influencing Machine layout for garment Industry

According to Suresh Dureja Director of Manufacturing, Canada Goose, Toronto, Canada,
Machine layout is the organization of space availability based on conditions required by
production system design and depends on numerous factors.”

• Kinds of products to produce

The amount of different kinds of produce items,Time of duty, Size of lot ,
garment design, degree of fluctuation in a year.
• Manufacturing system
Sewing system being followed, like make through, PBU assembly line, sectional
assembly line, UPS with overhead hanger, teamwork with stand up working (TSS).
• The style changeover
 Overall change - All products/styles being made are basically distinct from each
other and substantial changes in operation sequence and in layout of machine with
requirement of specific purpose machines, for example shirts, trousers, jackets, ladies
dresses, etc.
 Consecutive Change - The products/styles being created are with modest style
differences only. That is most of the operations are comparable and do not require
large changes in layout of machines/operations, every time new style is introduced,
for example in formal shirts, casual shirts, etc.

• The system will used for material

Per Bundle- The garment sections are formed into bundles of 5, 10 and 15 pieces
depending on sort of garment being manufactured. The bundles are transported from one
operation to another. Bundle size is vital for picking an effective handling mechanism.
Bundles can be in knotted form, in plastic bags, in boxes and baskets, in bundle vehicles,
in clamps, on rails, etc.

Per system- It means that garment parts are transferred piece by piece from one operation
to another, for example in Toyota Sewing System, etc.The garment parts in single piece
