About this Manual

This guide provides the system specifications of the SpiderCloud® Services Node (SCSN-9000). The
primary audience for this guide includes system engineers, network planners, system administrators, and
installation personnel.

SpiderCloud System Overview

SpiderCloud’s Enterprise Radio Access Network (E-RAN) solution contains two system elements: the
services node and the radio node. Multiple radio nodes are deployed inside a building and are connected
to the services node using standard Ethernet infrastructure. The SpiderCloud Services Node SCSN-9000
manages up to 100 radio nodes that support licensed, and optionally unlicensed, spectrum.
The SCSN-9000 is designed to accept two access modules that support UMTS and LTE radio access
technology and optionally a services module that can host third-party applications running on virtual
machines. The services module can also host a Wi-Fi controller to provide integrated Wi-Fi capacity and
coverage within the E-RAN.
Using a single SCSN-9000, the operator can aggregate traffic for all radio access technologies, manage
interference and mobility, and utilize a single backhaul and network management solution for all access
technologies.
The SCSN is the central control point of the small cell network and provides the following functionalities:
• User traffic aggregation
• Access control
• Radio Frequency (RF) management for system self optimization
• Single point of management and provisioning
• Interference coordination
• Mobility management
• Enterprise networking
• Single Iuh interface to the 3G UMTS mobile core network
• Single S1 interface to the 4G LTE packet core
• Powerful platform to host services at the edge
Figure 1 shows a logical view of the SpiderCloud architecture:

Placement
The services node is typically installed in one of two locations in the enterprise premises:
• Inside and connected to the enterprise LAN
• Between the firewall and the enterprise core-facing router interface
These locations allow for local routing of traffic for enterprise services. The services node requires manual
configuration of a static IP address typical of switch and LAN equipment.

Security
The SpiderCloud system uses Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) to authenticate and encrypt traffic
between the services node and the provider core network. It uses Encapsulating Security Payloads (ESP)
in tunnel mode, and IPsec Key Exchange (IKE)v2 for key negotiation.
The system supports mutual certificate-based authentication with the core network. By default, packets
between the services node and a radio node are authenticated and encrypted.

Timing
The services node uses IEEE 1588v2 defined Precision Time Protocol (PTP) to achieve synchronization
timing between the services node and the radio nodes. A high precision OCXO is used in the services
node to provide the master lock and each radio node in the deployment synchronizes to the services node
using PTP.
The SCSN-9000 includes an integrated Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver, providing the
option to connect an external GNSS antenna to the antenna port on the front panel of the services node.
By doing so, operators have the option to use either a GPS or GLONASS GNSS system as the primary
reference signal to the E-RAN network in order to achieve timing and frequency synchronization with their
macro 4G/LTE networks required to support advanced LTE features.

Interfaces
Radio nodes connect to the services node through an IPsec tunnel with standard Ethernet CAT 5e or
better cabling either through the existing enterprise LAN or a LAN dedicated to use by the mobile operator.
The services node connects directly to the security gateway in the mobile core network through an IPsec
tunnel. It authenticates with existing mobile core security gateways using factory-provisioned digital
certificates. The services node connects to the operator’s 3G network by establishing an Iuh connection to
the HNB gateway, or an Iu-CS connection to the Mobile Switching Center (MSC) and an Iu-PS connection
to the SGSN. The services node connects to the operator’s LTE core network by establishing an S1
connection to the MME and serving gateway.

Power Supplies
The services node uses two AC power supplies with redundant failover. Although only one of the power
supplies is needed to power the services node, SpiderCloud Wireless strongly recommends using two
power supplies.
When two power supplies are installed, either power supply is hot swappable, enabling replacement of a
power supply without affecting the operation of the services node. If the second power supply is not
installed, a metal plate snaps into place to cover the open slot and block Electromagnetic Interference
(EMI).

Figure 12 One AC Power Supply

SpiderCloud Technical Product Description: SCSN-9000

Air flows out the back of each power supply, accessible from the rear of the chassis. The power switch on
the rear of the services node is used to boot up or power down the main system board.

This unit might have more than one power supply connection. All connections must be
removed to de-energize the unit. The main switch should be powered off before servicing the
Caution unit.

Power Supply LEDs

Each power supply has status indicator LEDs:
• OK: Green when the unit is functioning normally (no faults) and the switch at the rear of the
chassis has been turned on.
• Failure: Indicates a failure within the power supply:
— Yellow indicator is steady on when the power supply has failed (for example, over-voltage,
fan failure, over-temperature, or over-current).
— Indicator is off when the power supply has no internal failure and is supplying the
requested output rails.
• ~AC: Indicates that an AC voltage within operating range is reaching the power supply.

Fans and Air Flow

The system has five main-board fans that are speed controlled. The air flows from front-to-back.

Dual Power Supplies Power Fans

Switch
Figure 14 Rear Panel Showing the Fans

Fans are field replaceable and hot swappable. Individual fans can be replaced without affecting service.
The system will be cooled sufficiently with one of the five fans disabled. However the unit should have at
least four fans running at all times.

Additional Applications Module

To support future expansion, the services node accepts an additional applications module for hosting third-
party applications on virtual machines. This module plugs into a designated slot within the services node.
The module installation procedure involves:
1. powering down the services node
2. opening the services node chassis
3. securing the new module into the existing connectors
4. closing the services node chassis
5. powering up the services node
Deploying new applications requires a software upgrade. SpiderCloud Wireless will publish the detailed
upgrade processes as part of future GA releases for third-party applications.
