Important information taken from the HES Teacher Handbook:

There is no traditional homework in 5 Melanson! However, if you feel that your child needs extra time or
practice feel free to provide support in the following ways:

1) It can periodically allow children to complete unfinished work at home.

2) It gives parents an opportunity to reinforce literacy or math facts that have been taught at school.

Making Connections and Establishing Routines

I am looking forward to getting to know this new group of students!

I anticipate having a positive first month where I will be introducing a new technology and working very
hard to establish routines, expectations, and appropriate behaviour for school. It is my hope that we
embrace this new school year with optimism as we discover new ways of learning together.
I also believe that it is important to spend lots of time talking and getting to know one another… and I
have had the pleasure of meeting this cohort of students last year. It is going to be a fantastic year!!!
I have worked very hard in making sure all my students each have a laptop at school so they may learn
how to use TEAMS as our primary educational platform. TEAMS provide all the essential features that
will permit my students stay on task and complete all their schoolwork whether they are at home or at
school. I believe that having access to online learning from the start will act as a safeguard in case of
sickness or school closures. Please feel free to click on the following links to familiarize yourself with

Using this new technology will undoubtably results in a steep learning curve but the important thing to
remember is that we are all in this together.
Academic Focus
Math Curriculum for September 2022:

MATH: We will be spending the first few days reviewing basic math concepts
and vocabulary. In our math module #2, Natural Numbers, we will be
working to develop an understanding of numbers up to a million. We will
also spend time estimating sums and differences. This is a nice place to begin the year as we
will simply be building on ideas the children have been exposed to in previous years.
In this unit, your child will also:
• Recognize and read numbers to 1 000 000.
• Read and write numbers in standard, expanded, and written forms.
• Use place value to represent numbers.
• Estimate sums and differences and select and use estimation strategies to determine if his or
her calculations are reasonable.
• Pose and solve problems using whole numbers.
It can never hurt to begin reviewing multiplication math facts at home! 😊

 French Curriculum for September 2022:

FRENCH LANGUAGE ARTS:

Speaking actions:
1. Introduce yourself, greet someone, interact in a respectful manner, talk to others
2. Accept / refuse something
3. Describe something
Writing task: Informative text (format: shared writing)
4. The class will work together on writing an informative text (co-created by the teacher
and the students) that provides information about their micro-society (e.g., 3-4
paragraphs that describe our conflict resolution strategies, our class flag, our values, our
strengths, our classroom artifacts).

Cross-Curricular Inquiry for September 2022

Investigation question 1: Who are we as a “group” and how are we going to

live in harmony in our micro-society?
Students participate in the creation of a micro-society in the classroom.
* First, they develop a collective identity, participate in a collaborative
environment, and identify collective values and ways of resolving conflicts.
* Students then explore the concept of artifacts and how they are symbols that represent
societies.

* Anglophone South School District (School Calendar 2022-2023)
