The Beatles Facts

The Beatles were an English rock band that originated and formed
in Liverpool in 1960. They are known as the most influential band of
all time. The band members comprising the Beatles were John
Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.

MUSICAL BACKGROUND

★ The root of their music was in skiffle, a music genre with jazz,
blues, and American folk influences.
★ Skiffle originated as a term in the United States and became
extremely popular in the UK in the 1950's.

★ Aside from Skiffle, their music was also influenced by Beat music
and British Rock and Roll. Beat music is also called "Merseybeat"
after bands from Liverpool and nearby areas beside the River
Mersey.

BAND FORMATION

★ In March 1957, John Lennon formed a skiffle group at the age of


sixteen, with his friends from Quarry Bank High School in
Liverpool.
★ They were first called Blackjacks but changed their name to
Quarrymen.
★ In July, Paul McCartney joined them as a rhythm guitarist at the
age of fifteen.
★ McCartney invited his friend George Harrison to watch the band in
February 1958.
★ Harisson, fifteen, impressively auditioned to Lennon for the band
but he thought that Harrison was too young.

★ However, Harrison
persisted during a second
meeting arranged by
McCartney.
★ Harrison played the lead
guitar part of the
instrumental song
"Raunchy" on the upper
deck of a Liverpool bus.
★ After that, they accepted

★ In January 1959, Lennon began his studies at the Liverpool
College of Art as his friends had left the Quarry Bank and his skiffle
group.
★ Left only were John, Paul, and George who played as a band
called Johnny Moondog, performing rock and roll every time they
could get a drummer.
★ Lennon's art school friend, Stuart Sutcliffe, joined the band as a
bassist.
★ Sutcliffe suggested to change the band name into The Beatles as a
tribute to Buddy Holly and the Crickets.
★ In May, they became the Silver Beetles and they went a brief tour
as a backing group for pop singer and fellow Liverpool resident,
Johnny Gentle.
★ By early July, they
changed their name
again into Silver Beatles,
and the next month,
shortened it to The
Beatles.
★ The Beatles resided in
Hamburg as it was
arranged by their

★ Lacking a full-time drummer, they auditioned and hired Pete Best
in mid-August 1960.
★ In 1961, they encountered Brian Epstein, a record-store owner
and a music columnist, who became their manager in January
1962.
★ In April, Sutcliffe died from a brain hemorrhage.

★ The Beatles were rejected by Decca Records but were signed by
producer George Martin to EMI's Parlophone label.
★ In 6 June 1962, The Beatles had their first recording session at
EMI's Abbey Road Studios in London.
★ Martin suggested that Best should be replaced by a session
drummer due to his poor drumming skills.
★ In mid-August, Ringo Starr joined them as he left his band Rory
and the Hurricanes.

BAND BREAKUP
★ The Beatles stopped touring in 1966.
★ The following year, 1967, Brian Epstein died.
★ In September 1969, Lennon privately informed the band that he
was leaving.
★ In 1970, each band member had their own artistic vision and began
working on their solo projects.
★ In April 10, 1970, McCartney announced to the public that he was
also leaving the band.

★ John Winston Lennon was an


English singer, songwriter, and
peace activist who co-founded
The Beatles.
★ After leaving the Beatles, John
Lennon started a band with Yoko
Ono, his second wife, called The
Plastic Ono Band. Later on, he
John Lennon and Yoko Ono
pursued a solo career,
in 1969

★ He was born on October 9, 1940 in Liverpool, England.
★ He was publicly shot in the head on 8 December 1980, New York
City, US. He died immediately.

PAUL McCARTNEY

★ Sir James Paul McCartney was born


on June 18, 1942.
★ He was the bass guitarist of the
Beatles.
★ He is one of the most successful
songwriters of all time.
★ After the Beatles disbanded, he
started another band with his first
wife, Linda, called Wings.

GEORGE HARRISON

★ George is sometimes called "The


Quiet Beatle."
★ George embraced Indian culture
and incorporated Indian
instrumentation and Hindu-aligned
spirituality in the Beatles' work.
★ He was born on February 25, 1943

★ Sir Richard Starkey, or


Ringo Starr was born on 7
July 1940.
★ He is an English musician,
singer, songwriter, and actor
who gained worldwide fame
as the drummer for The
Beatles.
★ For one song on each
album, he sang a song with
the band, including "With a Ringo Starr in 1964
Little Help from My Friends",
"Yellow Submarine", "Good ★ He also wrote and sang the
Night", and their cover of Beatles' songs "Don't Pass Me
"Act Naturally". By" and "Octopus's Garden".

LEGACY
★ The Beatles were compared to Picasso by former Rolling Stone
Magazine Associate Robert Greenfield.
★ The Beatles were praised by the British Poet Philip Larkin,
describing them as the first advance in popular music since the War.
