THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

The entrepreneurial skill is a given ability for

everyone to make their lives as competitive enough to get

their needs and wants and also to maintain economical

growth.

According to Economics Online (2019), all societies

face the same economic problem, which is the problem of how

to make the best use of the limited or scarce resources. The

economic problem exists because, although the needs and

wants of people are endless, the resources available to

satisfy their needs and wants are limited.

This study shows what entrepreneurial skills are

required especially for ABM students and which of these

could be developed by the study. To build any business, it

should consider not only the quality of a business but also

the ability of the Entrepreneurs to manage the business to

improve the economic growth in the society.

This study focuses on specific entrepreneurial skills

which are planning skill, interpersonal skill, innovation

skill, decision making skill and organizing skill. Besides

knowing what the minimum specific skills that the

2

entrepreneurs must have, it would be interesting to

understand how entrepreneurs acquire/learn these skills.

Having entrepreneurial skills will benefit those future

entrepreneurs in having a successful business. It will help

them have a strong desire to build a business by leading

their path in terms of managing a business. It will

introduce them to the different types of skills in

entrepreneurial which are helpful ability in facing

hardships or struggles in entrepreneurship. The

entrepreneurs will improve their abilities in their

expertise area in having entrepreneurial skills. These

skills will lead every entrepreneur in making decisions and

to be wise in every step in their business. It will also

develop their social interaction and in having a great team.

Thus, the research on which this study is based is

exploratory and is intended to pioneering knowledge on

entrepreneurial skills of ABM students of Mayapyap National

High School. First, the research explores the minimum

specific key of entrepreneurial skills that the ABM students

must personally possess to be an entrepreneur.

Secondly, the research explores how ABM students

learn their methods of learning entrepreneurial skills. The

3

research will also explore any possible relationships and

correlations amongst the variables.

All entrepreneurial skills are probably important to

ABM students specifically because it is closely related to

their course or strand. It is unlikely that all these skills

are of equal importance to an entrepreneur, and it is

unlikely for an ABM student to be highly competent in all of

these skills when he/she first starts on his/her venture.

Background of the Study

The economy is getting larger and so the needs of the

people in this case the business world should be expanded to

provide the needs of the society. In spite having a diverse

demographic, the basic strength behind entrepreneurial

success is having the skills of an entrepreneur. Development

of skilled manpower for the use of industry and trade is a

thrust area. Skill improvement in the emerging skill sets

needs to be focused on. This study will help to determine

the specific entrepreneurial skills of an ABM student that

is needed in order to be a successful entrepreneur and to be

a positive contributor to the society.

Theoretical Framework

In this section, the researchers will find theories for

the description entrepreneurial skill.

Entrepreneurial success has been perceived in many

ways, depending upon the perception of the owner. According

to Brush and Vanderwerf (1992), success has been defined as

a particular aspect of performance. Factors affecting the

success or the output in the business in terms of profit,

assets or income can be a determinant to judge a success of

the venture. The previous study has considered ‘perceived

business chance’ as the measure to entrepreneurial success.

Perceived business chance has been mentioned in various

literatures as an important dimension of measuring the

chance of entrepreneurial success (Chaganti, DeCarolis &

Deeds, 1995; Cooper & Dunkelberg, 1986).

According to Lau, Man and Chan (1999), entrepreneurial

competencies are considered higher level characteristics

encompassing personality traits, skills and knowledge that

can be seen as the total ability of the entrepreneur to

perform a job role successfully.

Conceptual Framework
5

Entrepreneurial skills are compose of specific skills

such as planning skill, interpersonal skill, innovation

skill, decision making skill, and organization skill. The

planning process helps an entrepreneur identify exactly what

needs to be accomplished to build the venture, and what

human and financial resources are needed (Hill, 2018). It

also cited by IESE Businessa School, (2016) it can also help

challenge and change your own views and biases (not only of

your prospective business but also of your own skills and

competence), which will ultimately help the development of

your business idea. Interpersonal is having the physical and

technical skill set to do your job. Contractors and business

owners also need to possess advanced communication skills

for negotiating, closing sales and conveying abstract ideas

(Admin, 2016). In Additional that according to Youth Citizen

Entrepreneurship Competition, (2018) if you’re doing

something focused on others, you can’t achieve it without

collaborating with other people like you that share the same

goals. It is crucial that all relationships are in place

when you are working toward a goal or when you’re part of a

team. Innovation is a process that entrepreneurs have the

opportunity to make their ideas become marketable (Fadaee,

2014). Innovation is achieved by providing something

original and is often seen to produce efficiency, leading to

6

an idea that significantly affects the general society.

(Henderson, 2017). The decision-making process is one of the

most critical processes in your company. Simply, you as an

entrepreneur will make decisions about everything

(Framework, 2018). It also according to HughesEducation,

(2018) it is very crucial to the functioning of an

organisation or any life for that matter. The possibilities

of attainment of organisational goals and objectives hinge

on the sole act of decision making.

Organization is all about keeping things in proper

order. For any business, organization plays a significant

role in helping you achieve your goals. Practicing effective

organizational skills will help you personally and

professionally, and your good organization skills will be

reflected in the completion of all of your everyday

responsibilities (Alexis, 2018). Good organizational skills

can free up much-needed minutes every day for you to spend

on more important tasks. (Gentry, 2019)

These five variables of entrepreneurial skills help to

determine the specific skills that can be obtain through

different times and situations. It is also the key to help

improve their entrepreneurial skills.
