movement, either improvised or purposefully selected. This

movement has aesthetic and often symbolic value. Dance
can be categorized and described by its choreography, by
its repertoire of movements, or by its historical period or
place of origin.

For thousands of years, people have danced. Every culture appears to

have developed its own, unique method of expressing emotion through
movement and rhythm, from the elemental, formal dances of
Renaissance-era courts to the frantic gyrating of the Twist, from the
intricate maneuvers of early ballet to the equally complex moves of
1980s breakdancing. In this review, we'll look at some of the most
notable dancing moments from the 1970s through 2012

DANCING THROUGH TIME

1970s
People on the dance floor began to
express themselves via individual, more
freestyle dancing routines, and the
regimented dances of the 1960s were
abandoned.

Disco fused elements of funk, soul, and

Latin rhythms to produce a very
danceable sound. The earliest disco
dancing occurred in New York and
Philadelphia clubs, and it quickly gained
favor among African-American and Latino
groups.

Popular disco dance steps included

pivot turns, foot stamps, side steps,
and shoulder rocks.

1980s
The most famous dance of the 1980s was
the "Moonwalk" in which the dancer appears
to glide backward while walking forward.

Although the dance was made famous by

Michael Jackson, it dates back to the 1930s.

Breakdancing-also known as b-boying-

originated in the hip-hop scene of the
1970s but became popular all over the
world in the 1980s.

Largely improvisational, it involve a series

of difficult physical maneuvers, from
balancing on one hand to doing a spinning
headstand. It was featured in films such
as "Flasdance" and "Breakin'".

The Robot: Although it's been around since

the 60s, this dance became popular in the
80s with Styx's "Mr. Roboto". During the
robot requires the person to move their
entire body in a mechanical way with abrupt
movements, resembling a robot.

Vogue Originating in Harlem in the '70s, it

became a '90s favorite with Madonnas's
1990s
"Vogue". Vogueing includes a number of
dance moves using fast movements with
the arms and studtting.

Macarena: This dance

was an instant hit when
it cameout in 1995. The
song is by Spanish duo Los
Del Rio, and the dance is made
up of 8 simple moves using the arm and the
hips.

In 1999, the video game dance Dance

Revolution gave even the shyest
wallflowers a way to shine on the dance
floor.

The game involves standing on a platform

and stomping out musical patterns as
directed in order to keep up with a
popular song.

2000s Hip-hop has dominated the
