n January 1, 2007, 59-year-old
V Siva Swamy (Siva), a Chen-
nai-based entrepreneur run-
ning a talent search firm, de-
cided to give his wife Ma-
halakshmi (Maha) a ‘VRS’ or ‘voluntary
retirement scheme’ from the kitchen and
routine housekeeping three years from that
date. He told her that from January 1, 2010,
both of them would follow their passion –
serving society.
Mahalakshmi quit her corporate job in
1980 in Mumbai to focus on bringing up
their two sons. The family moved to Chen-
nai in 1987 when Siva was transferred to
the head office there.
After their boys settled down in school,
Maha got involved in social services like
volunteering at the suicide prevention hel-
pline ‘Sneha’ for almost a decade, volunteer-
ing at Rasa, a school for spe-
cial children, and she contin-
ues to be an active member
of the Inner Wheel Club, said
Siva. As working for the de-
prived gave her a lot of satis-
faction and happiness, I de-
cided to join her and do ser-
vice full time,” he said.
After the couple settled down at a retire-
ment home in Coimbatore in January 2010,
they decided to do service in craft, skill and
education.
“We decided to focus on building an
interest in going to school among children

“So we decided to start a ‘school after
school’ free of cost, for chil-
dren of poor backgrounds,
where we would help them
complete their homework for
the day and revise the day’s
lessons,” she said. “We also
realised that when we do that,
they go to school with confi-
dence, interact better with
their peers, teachers and enjoy the mid-day
meal better,” said Siva, who is now 69.
They bought a small building right out-
side their campus and spent Rs 45 lakh to
reno- vate it. On Jan-
uary 23, 2014, Kalvi Thunai was born. They
registered it as a public charitable trust.
“On January 23, we had just three chil-
dren of domestic helps in our retirement
homes,” said Maha. “That number grew to
50 by the month-end and we had two paid
teachers and a few volunteers from our
retirement complex to manage the school,”
she said. More than three-and-a-half years
on, their student strength has risen to 130,
between classes four and 12, and they now
have 10 paid teachers and three voluntary
teachers, including Maha.
In February this year, Kalvi Thunai tied
up with Bosch under its CSR initiative to
offer a two-month certified skill develop-
ment programme for youth.
From next year, they plan to admit only
government school students, even if it
means slightly reducing the student
strength.
