To determine the package count, its type, length of yarn, and package density:

Abstract:
We observed different yarn package and took two package from them. Then we
decided the yarn type, calculate the yarn count, density of yarn package, density of yarn and
measure the length of yarn wound on package with the help of Vernier caliper, measuring tape,
weighing balance and warping reel.

Introduction:
Wrap Reel is a device that is use to produce skeins/lee of yarn of a pre-
determined length and number of turns for count and strength testing. Wrap Reel Machine is
used to prepare lea (120 yards) yarns for ascertaining the count strength. The reel is of a standard
size and its revolutions are counted as the yarn is wrapped around it. Typically, a set number of
revolutions will be used so that the hank is of a standard size a skein or lea. For example, a skein
of cotton would be 20 turns on a reel of 54 inches circumference, making 15 yards. [1]

Sr.No Specifications
1 Machine Name Lea Wrapping Machine
2 Manufacturer Huawei
3 Model No. HY0863
4 No. of spindle 6
5 Package type Cone package
6 Paper cone color Gray

There are two types of yarn packages.

 Cone package
 Cheese package
Yarn count is a term used to express the fineness or coarseness of yarn. In spinning process,
there is a relation between the weight of the yarn and the length of yarn. This relation is indicated
as count. fineness or coarseness of yarn is determined by the extent of drawing process (varying
draft) and designated by number. The number is called count. [2]

Package length is determined by weight of the cone used and yarn count. For calculating density
volume of the cone is calculated and then its density is determined using basic formula of
density. Package density has important effect on yarn dyeing. [3]

Experimental:
Materials:
 Measuring tape
 Weighing balance
 1 yarn Packages (cone & cheese)
 Vernier caliper
 Warping Reel (HUAYI Science & Technology/ HY06E)

Methodology:

 We took two different types of yarn Packages and observed the type of package.
 We measured the diameters of packages from outer side {(d1, D1), (d2, D2)} by using
Vernier caliper respectively.
 We measured the height of packages by using measuring tape.
 We measured the weight of packages by using weight balance respectively.
 Then make lee of packages on Wraping Reel.
 Then we put the packages on the spool carrier of wraping reel.
 Then passed the yarn from open guide, then tension equalizer, then from traversing
element and then roll the yarn on a hook.
 Adjust machine such as after completing 30 rounds machine stops automatically and we
will obtain a lee having length equals to 1620” inch or 45 yards.
 Weight each lee by using weight balance.
 Then we calculated the yarn count by using the following formula:

Yarn Count(NeC) =
 Then we calculated yarn length by using following formula:
Yarn length(m)= yarn weight×768.1×yarn count

 Then we calculated the volume of the package by using the following formula:

(for Cone Packages)

Package Volume = +D1d1+ )-( +D2d2+ }

Where
h = Height of the Package.
D1 = Diameter of the package from the bottom.
d1= Diameter of the package from the top.
D2 = Diameter of the paper cone from the bottom
d2 = Diameter of the package from the top.

(for chees Packages)

Package Volume = - )

 Then we calculated the Density of the cone by using following formula:

Density of the Package =

Results and Discussions:

After performing the whole experiment we get results of count, length,
volume and density of yarn package. we got different result for both packages which are given
below.
Table 1: Observation for cone package:

D1 = Dia. of package at base = 7.9 cm D2 = Dia. of paper at base = 7.5 cm

d1 = Dia. of package at tip = 5 cm d2 = Dia. of paper at tip = 4.1 cm

W2= Weight of package = 77.2 g W1= Weight of paper cone= 60g

W = Weight of yarn on package = 17.2 g
W=W2 – W1=77.2 – 60 =17.2 g h = Height of wound yarn package = 13 cm

No of revolution of yarn on wrapping reel=20 Weight of yarn lee = 0.820 g

Length of lee =2743.2 cm

Results for cone package:

Calculations
Formula
Yarn Count(NeC) = Count = 19.73 NeC
L(cm)= 54*20 = 1080 *2.54 = 2743.2 cm
W (cm) = 0.820 g
Length of Package (m)= 768.1 ×yarn count * Length of package = 768.1 *19.73 *17.2
Yarn weight (lbs.) 454
= 574.1 m
Vol. of Cone package = Volume 3.14 * 13 {(7.9)2 + (7.9)(5) + (5)2 –
2 2 2 2
V=πh/12{(D1 +D1d1+ d1 ) – (D2 +D2d2+ d2 )} 12
(7.5)2 + (7.5)(4.1) +(4.1)2 }
= 78.5631 m3
Density of package = Density = 17.2 = 0.2189 m3
78.563

Table 2: Count of different Yarn on Different Type of Packages.

Weight of cone Lee Weight

Sr No. Package Type (g) Count

1 Cone 77.2 g 0.820 g 19.73 NeC

We have observed from the table 2 that as the Lee weight Increases then the Count of the yarn
decreases. So they are in an inverse relation.
Table 3: Relation between Package Weight, Length , Volume, Density

Sr .No Package Weight Package Length Package

Package Type (g) (cm) Density
(g/ )

1 Cone 60 g 574.1 m 0.2189g/ cm3

From table 3 we observed that as the package weight increases the length and volume of the
package increases too but the package density decreases.
Conclusion:
We have concluded that by increasing the Lee Weight the Count of the yarn
decreases and vice versa. So there is an inverse relationship between Lee Weight and the Count
of the Yarn. With an increase in the weight of the package the length of the package increases
due to which the volume of the package also increases. But the Package density decreases by the
increase in Volume. So there exist an inverse relation between weight and density of the
package. It is concluded that package count, package type, length, package density found is
19.73 NeC, Cone type, 574.1 m, 0.2189 g/m3 .

Lab Task:
You have find out (determine) the length of package and now from of package
how much fabric can be produced. If the waste percentage is 5%.
Package length = 574.1 m
Wastage percentage = 5%
Yarn lose during weaving = 574.1 * 5/100
= 28.70 m
Yarn obtained after 5% lose = 574.1 – 28.705
= 541.395 m
