Sharks use Earth’s magnetic fields to find their way home by Malini Giridhar
Florida, May 7: Bryan Keller, a marine biologist at the University of
Florida, found that bonnethead sharks swam in the direction of their
home waters when they were placed in a tank charged with an
electromagnetic field.

Earth’s molten core has iron and other metals in it. These metals
produce electric currents which create a magnetic field that
surrounds the earth. The North and South Poles have magnetic
signs and invisible lines of magnetism between them. Earth’s

magnetism is strongest near the poles. Hence, Earth’s magnetism Image from wikipedia
is not evenly distributed.

Sharks have special receptors called Ampullae of Lorenzini in clusters around the nose. These
receptors can sense changes in voltage in the surrounding environment. These electroreceptors help
sharks perceive and react to magnetic fields.

To test whether sharks can use Earth’s magnetic field to navigate themselves, researchers caught
twenty bonnethead sharks from a spot off the Gulf of Mexico on the coast of Florida. (continued on

New species of frog discovered in the Philippines by Hima Sutha

Kansas, May 7: A team of researchers from the University of
Kansas discovered a new frog species in the Philippines. The frog
species found was the Mindoro fanged frog (Limnonectes beloncioi)
on the island of Palawan. Fanged frogs are frogs with large teeth.
Teeth are not very long or are absent in other frogs. These two
species were almost indistinguishable. For over 100 years, they
were considered to be part of the Acanthi fanged frog species
(Limnonectes acanthi). However, the Mindoro fanged frog has
different properties in its mating calls from the Acanthi fanged frog.

of the same species. The scientists stated that these species looked
identically similar but were genetically quite different.

Languages in India: Urdu (‫)اُردُو‬

By Pravar Mukkala
Urdu (‫)اُردُو‬
Modern Standard Urdu is a Central Indo-Aryan
language. It is a scheduled language of India and the
official language and lingua franca of Pakistan. A lingua
franca, also called a trade language, is a language
different groups of people who use different languages
use to communicate with each other. Urdu, like Hindi,
evolved from the Shauraseni Prakrit and and
Shauraseni Apabhraṃśa.
Hindi and Urdu have a close, intertwining history. When
Muslims arrived in India, they brought their own
language, Persian (also called Farsi), with them. The
Mughals, a major Muslim empire in India, made their
national language Persian. This meant Persian was
spoken and used in official settings and many educated
people knew how to speak it. Persian and Arabic words
slowly made their way into the Hindavi language, as it
was known then, and the language, then written using
the Perso-Arabic script, began to be standardized as a
courtly, poetic language known as Urdu. Urdu, along
with English, was made the national language of British
India in 1850. The language spoken near Delhi, known
as Khari Boli, was standardized using the Devanagari
script. This new dialect, now known as the official
language Hindi, gained pace around 1880. Each
dialect continued to be standardized with words from
Persian being added to Urdu and words from Sanskrit
being added to Hindi.
Urdu is written using the Perso-Arabic script, a
script that is used by Arabic, Persian, and other
languages spoken in the Middle East. The Perso-
Arabic script is an abjad that is written from right to left,
which is not a very common feature of a writing script.
An abjad is a type of script that has minimal vowel
representation while writing, and usually only the
consonants in words are written. This may make
reading and understanding words difficult.
Urdu has 70 million native speakers and 230 million
total speakers.

Sports: Football - Chelsea Beat Real Madrid to Reach Finals by Anirudh Bhargava
London, May 6: Chelsea beat Real Madrid 2-0 to reach the
finals of the UEFA Champions League. They won the league
only once in 2012, while Real Madrid has so far won thirteen
times. Chelsea’s Mason Mount and Timo Werner scored a
goal apiece. Werner hit a header into the empty net 28
minutes into the match. Mason Mount tapped the ball into the
goal just five minutes from time. That was enough to seal
Chelsea’s victory.
Chelsea and Manchester City will play in the finals in Istanbul
on 30th May as they both won in their second leg.
