PAPER DROP DESIGN

COMPETITION
The main objective is to DESIGN FLYING DEVICES (ACTUALLY FALLING
DEVICES) to meet two (2) criteria;
a. The device must stay in the air as long as possible in a minimum of two seconds.
b. The device must land as close as possible to a given target but no more than one meter away.

MATERIALS LIST
Each group needs:
 3 sheets 8.5 x 11-inch paper
 adhesive tape
 one 3 x 5-inch index card
 4 paper clips
 scissors

PAPER DROP DESIGN
COMPETITION
Mechanics:
1. Group yourself into 5-6 members each.
2. Review the steps of the Engineering Design Process
3. Strictly follow the step by step method on engineering design
process. Before building the device, develop first a conceptual
design on paper(with sketches and dimensions, etc). After
which, begin constructing your first device based on the
conceptual design you drew.

PAPER DROP DESIGN
COMPETITION
Mechanics:
5. Procedure on Testing your device:
a. You have 2 drop runs to be conducted to test your device: Hold the first trial by placing the
target on the floor and dropping it from six feet above the ground.
b. Record the time from when the device is dropped until it hits the ground then measure the
distance from the device to the target.
c. You have the chance to modify your device between runs, Any changes on the design must
be documented.
d. A video must be recorded on each runs for documentation (included in the
presentation/report)
(Note: The most common approach is for you to drop devices directly above a target on the floor;
however, you do not have to start directly above the target. You may seek to increase the flying
time by beginning somewhere other than directly above the target.)

Mechanics:
6. A report and presentation is required and will be graded.
7. The report must include:
a. Sketches with dimension of the originally proposed device, any modified devices and the final
design
b. It must describe the steps of the engineering design process within the context of their flying
device designs.
c. Students should report also on the modifications made in their designs, the rationale for their
modifications, and the resulting impact of the modifications (for example, flight time, distance
from target).

Scoring System
The scoring for this competition emphasizes flight time over accuracy. The length of time
before reaching the ground comprises 70% of the overall score, and the distance from the target
accounts for the other 30% of the score. Scores are scaled by the slowest and fastest times or closest
and farthest distances. The equation for calculating the time portion of the score, a maximum of 70
points, is as follows.

The distance scores are calculated in a similar manner with 30 points maximum, using the
following formula.
