Buffers
A buffer solution resists drastic changes in pH when a small
amount of acid or base is added, or when diluted.
Examples of buffers:

Action of Buffers
Henderson-Hasselbalch equation
Relates the pH of a buffer solution to the concentration of
buffer components
Simply a rearranged version of the Ka expression for HA.
Derivation:
Ka
HA(aq) + H2O (l) ⇌ H3O+ (aq) + A− (aq)
[H3O+] [A-]
Ka =
[HA]
Rearranging gives:
[HA]
[H3O+ ] = K a x
[A − ]
Recall: log (MN) =
Take the (-) logarithm of both sides of the equation
log M + log N
[HA]
- log [H3O+] = - log Ka - log − 8
[A ]

[HA] and denominator in log

NOTES:
1. The WA solution has lower
initial pH.
2. pH drops quickly at the
start, but less near the
equiv. pt.
3. pH at the equiv. pt. ≠ 7
