CALA COMPONENT D

LEARNING AREA : MATHEMATICS

LEVEL : FORM 4

CALA : RESEARCH

SYLLABUS TOPIC : INEQUALITIES ……. Page 47

SUB TOPIC : LINEAR PROGRAMMING

TITLE : PUBLISHING A NEW BOOK

COMPETENCE/SKILLS : DRAWING, CALCULATING

BACKGROUND

A new book is to be published in both a hardback and a paperback edition. A book seller
agrees to purchase

i) 15 or more hardback copies

ii) More than 25 paperback copies

iii) at least 45, but fewer than 60 copies altogether

THE CALA: This CALA consists of two parts, part A and part B. You are required to
respond to both parts

You are required to respond to both parts.

PART A

By way of inequalities, show the information that should be clearly available for the book
seller so that he plans his budget perfectly. There must be 4 inequalities to satisfy the
information given so far. Then present the information the information on the Cartesian plane
shading the unwanted regions and using broken or solid line where appropriate. Thus take ‘h’
to represent the number of hardback copies and ‘p’ the number of paperback copies. The
point (h; p) on the plane represent h- hardback copies and p- paperback copies. Use the scale
of 2cm to 10 books on each axis.

PART B

Given that each hardback copy costs $5 and that each paperback copy costs $2 , calculate the
number of each sort that the bookseller must buy if he is prepared to spend between $180 and
$200 altogether and he has to buy each sort in packets of 5.

NB: Use inequalities to show this information and then present the inequalities graphically

CALA TIPS

 Write down the inequalities for the information.

 Present the inequalities on a Cartesian plane.
 Consider the scale (2cm: 10 books) on each plane axis.
 Use broken and solid lines where appropriate.
 Mark the point that gives answer to the question clearly on the graph.
 Write down the answer on its own space and make it clear.
