North Colonie Summer School Guidelines

Participation Requirement
Students receive one participation point for each day of active class participation, up to 29 points. In addition to the prescribed academic expectations and course requirements, students are required to have a minimum of twenty-six (26) participation points in order to receive a grade in a summer school course. Students failing to attend class for any reason, including suspension, will not receive a participation point for that class period. Students missing a portion of an instructional period will lose half a participation point for up to 15 minutes of absence and a full participation point for absences exceeding 15 minutes.

Textbooks & School Equipment

Students are responsible for issued textbooks and other equipment. Each book has a sticker with an identification number. Students should write their names and indicate the condition of the book on this sticker. Any misuse of these books will result in a fine which is based on the age of the book. Students are responsible to pay for any books not returned to the school. If a student withdraws from a class, any textbooks and/or materials must be immediately returned to the summer school office.

Materials
A successful summer school experience depends on students being prepared for class every day with a notebook, pen and pencil, and any other materials required by the teacher.

Transportation
All transportation to and from summer school must be furnished by the student and/or their parents or guardians. The North Colonie Central School District does not provide transportation services for summer school. Students who arrive early are restricted to the LaFollette Dining hall prior to their scheduled class. Students may use the Library Media Center for summer school course related purposes. Once students are finished with their courses for the day, they must promptly leave the building. Loitering is not authorized; moreover, building areas not utilized for summer school are strictly prohibited.

Parking, Cars, & Bicycles

The North Colonie School District assumes no liability in case of bicycle theft. If you must ride a bike to school, secure it with a strong lock and chain. Bicycles are not permitted inside the building. Student drivers will be given a designated parking area and must follow all school and traffic regulations.

Grade Reporting

Course grades are used to evaluate students class performance and comprehension. Since summer school is divided into six marking periods, students will receive a report card each week. The First Semester Grade is the combined average of the midterm exam and twice the average of the first three weeks.

Guiding Principles for Student Dress Attire

The Board of Education agrees strongly with the State Commissioner of Education that school boards of education have the power and obligation to make reasonable rules concerning the dress and appearance of children while in school. The Board believes that among its educational responsibilities is to guide pupils in the matter of appropriate dress and appearance. Defiance of rules regarding dress, or of any other reasonable rules, is detrimental to the overall discipline of the school, to the morale of the student body and the faculty, and to the educational process in general. The Commissioner of Education has determined that the following clothing categories are not permissible. These categories include: 1. Health and safety to the wearer and others. -i.e., long-haired sweaters worn near open flames and heating elements, or loose parts of clothing worn near machinery). 2. Possibility of damage of school property. -i.e., metal cleats on shoes or clothing which may scratch or gouge furniture. 3. 4. Indecency. Distraction so as to interfere with the learning and teaching process. -i.e., jingling jewelry, any clothing that can distract other students). Although the Board will not prohibit any attire solely on the bass of inappropriateness, the Board will strive to foster student dress and appearance which is appropriate for the business of the school. Classroom teachers have an educational obligation to encourage neat, clean, appropriate dress.

Food and Drink Services During School Day

Breakfast (Bagels, cold drinks) will be served every morning in Hole in the wall in LaFollette cafeteria from 7:15 am-7:45 am. The vending machines will also be available for students to get snacks during the day. Lunch will not be provided so students are responsible to bring their own lunch to school.

Medications and Illness

All medications for students must go directly to the school nurse to be checked in and monitored throughout summer school. Any student who is not feeling well can report to the nurses office. However, the student must understand if they do report to the nurses office for illness, they will lose some or all participation points for that day.

Tobacco Products
1. 2. Smoking or the use of any tobacco product in school and on school grounds is prohibited.* The school has an obligation to protect the health and welfare of the students in its care. Given the potential long-term harmful effects of tobacco use, even with parental consent, to allow smoking would be inconsistent with that obligation and serves to negate the instructional objectives of the state mandated health curriculum.
*Chapter 80, Article 13E of the Law of New York State, NCCS BOE Policy

Dangerous Drugs and Alcohol

1. The sale, distribution, use of, or possession of drugs* or alcohol on school premises is prohibited and will result in an immediate three (3) day suspension. * 2 220.2 NYS Penal Law- Any narcotic drug, depressant, stimulant or hallucinogenic drug.

Possession of Firearms Weapons

1. No student shall bring a firearm* on any portion of the premises of a school owned or controlled by this school district. * 91 of Title 18 of the United States Code defines firearm as consistent with any weapon (including a starter gun) which will or is designated to or may readily be converted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive; the frame or receiver of such weapon; any firearm muffler or silencer, or any destructive device. The term does not include antique firearms. The first offense for possession of a firearm shall subject the offender to: a. Immediate suspension from school, pending a disciplinary hearing before the Board of Education, which could result in a long term suspension. b. Colonie Police notification so that criminal proceedings, if appropriate, may be instituted.

Weapons Other than Firearms

1. No student shall bring any weapon other than a firearm (i.e., knives, batons, brass knuckles, etc.) on any portion of the premises of a school owned or controlled by this school district. The first offense for possession of any weapon other than a firearm or on the premises of a school but not on the person shall subject the offender to: a. Immediate suspension from school for a five (5) day period. b. Colonie Police notification so that criminal proceedings, if appropriate, may be

10

instituted. Reinstatement will occur only after a reinstatement conference with the student and parent(s) is held. The offender may be referred to the Board of Education for a formal hearing.

Use or Threat of Any Weapon

1. The use or threat of use of any weapon shall subject the offender to: a. immediate suspension from school, pending a disciplinary hearing before the Board of Education which could result in a long term suspension. b. Colonie Police notification so that criminal proceedings, if appropriate, may be instituted. Reference: Board of Education Policy #5131.2

Walkman, Portable Radios, Beepers, Pagers, Cellular Phones and Other Such Devices
Walkman, portable radios, beepers, pagers, cellular phones, and other such devices are prohibited during the school day.

Fire Drill Regulations

The fire alarm signal is the same for a fire drill (a continuous ring of the fire alarm bell). All rules must be followed since it is impossible to determine whether the signal indicates a drill or an alarm. Look for special fire exit instructions in each of your classrooms. When the alarm sounds, students are to pass quickly and quietly out of the building in an orderly fashion. Teachers must accompany their students outside and ensure that everyone stands at least 100 feet from the building.

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO TALKING DURING A FIRE DRILL

When the announcement is made, students are to return to their classes using the same entrance that was used to leave the building. Students should pass quickly and quietly to their classrooms.

IN THE EVENT YOURE REGULAR EXIT IS BLOCKED, STOP, TURN AROUND, WAIT AND LISTEN FOR INSTRUCTIONS.

Guidelines for Student Conduct When Taking Examinations

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Students must follow all directions given in the examination testing room. Students may not talk while test papers are in their possession. Students may not leave the testing area without proper supervision or until dismissed by the head proctor. During school examination, students must stay a minimum of two hours. No student may give aid to or receive aid from other students. Students must have only prescribed materials in their possession.

The following are three examples of negative student conduct. 1. Obvious cheating (written and/or oral communications concerning subject matter of that specific test): a. The Summer School Administrator will notify the students parents; the test will be invalidated with a score of zero; and no make-up will be permitted. b. If a student has been found guilty of committing, or of attempting to commit, fraud in a Regents examination, the Summer School Administrator is authorized to cancel the students examination. 2. Suspected cheating (talking, looking on another paper, signals, etc.): a. Written documentation signed by the proctor and the student will be forwarded to the Summer School Administrator. b. If a second incident occurs, the student will be removed from the testing area; the Summer School Administrator will notify the students parents; the test will be invalidated with a score of zero; and no make-up will be permitted. 3. Improper conduct (leaving seat or room without permission, pencil passing, etc.): a. On any occasion when an examination is in progress, a student suspected of improper conduct will be warned once. b. On a second occasion, or at the conclusion of the testing period, the student will be turned over to the Summer School Administrator. The Summer School Administrator will determine the penalty after consulting with the proctors involved and the department supervisor.
