PROJECT PROPOSAL ON GULAYAN SA PAARALAN PROJECT

(Urban Garden)
S.Y. 2022 - 2023

I. RATIONALE

The Department of Education, with its core value Makakalikasan, supports

the national governments effort in protecting and conserving the environment
thru the National Greening Program.
To address malnutrition and hunger, and to help promote food security,
the department issued Memorandum number 293, series of 2007 to encourage
public schools to ensure continuous supply of vegetables for school feeding.
Hence, Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (GPP) was implemented in support to the
hunger mitigation initiatives of the government.
This is one of the sub-programs of the National Greening Program of the
department. The program will be the source of vegetables to sustain the School-
Based Feeding Program and as a source of income for the sustenance and
maintenance of the Gulayan sa Paaralan.
The said project is a big challenge especially for schools with limited
spaces, such as San Juan National High School. Unconventional method of plant
propagation should be utilized to cope to the project’s objectives.

II. OBJECTIVES

1. Establish an urban garden;

2. Produce vegetables which can be used to sustain supplementary feeding;
3. Showcase a small-scale food production model;
4. Improve and beautify the appearance of the site/location of the project;
and
5. Inculcate among students and communities the value of gardening, good
health and nutrition and love of labor.

III. NAME OF ACTIVITY/PROJECT TITLE/SCHEDULE OF WORKS

1. Urban Garden
In Project Urban Garden, a vegetable garden will be constructed on
the perimeter fence along the motorcycles parking space of the school
using the steel stand used from the previous “Gulayan sa Paaralan
Project” headed by Mr. Garry V. Vegiga. The open space from the right-
side entrance of faculty rooms at the back of the school will also be used.
Composting and recycling will be implemented by making a
compost pit and using plastic bottles as a vegetable pot. Through this
process, garbage disposal will be decreased.
Vegetables that will be produced from the garden will be utilized to
support the supplementary feeding program of the school. Other produce
will be sold to willing students, teachers, and community, as a form of
income generating project to sustain the needs of the garden.
This project will promote the awareness of having a sustainable
garden even if there is no planting ground. By building an urban garden,
you can have supply of different vegetables that provides nutrients needed
to have a healthy body specially for those students under the
supplementary feeding.
