WHY SET GOALS? (Mind tools)

Goal setting is used by top-level athletes, successful business-people and achievers in all
fields. Setting goals gives you long-term vision and short-term motivation.

Step 1: Setting Lifetime Goals

The first step in setting goals is to consider what you want to achieve in your lifetime.
To give a broad, balanced coverage of all important areas in your life:
 Career - What level do you want to reach in your career, or what do you want to
achieve?
 Financial - How much do you want to earn? How is this related to your career goals?

3
 Education - Is there any knowledge you want to acquire in particular? What
information and skills will you need to have in order to achieve other goals?
 Family - Do you want to be a parent? If so, how are you going to be a good parent?
How do you want to be seen by a partner or by members of your extended family?
 Artistic - Do you want to achieve any artistic goals?
 Attitude - Is any part of your mindset holding you back? Is there any part of the way
that you behave that upsets you? (If so, set a goal to improve your behaviour or find a
solution to the problem.)
 Physical - Are there any athletic goals that you want to achieve, or do you want good
health deep into old age? What steps are you going to take to achieve this?
 Pleasure - How do you want to enjoy yourself? (You should ensure that some of your
life is for you!)
 Public Service - Do you want to make the world a better place? If so, how?

Step 2: Setting Smaller Goals

Once you have set your lifetime goals, set a five-year plan of smaller goals that you need to
complete if you are to reach your lifetime plan. Then create a one-year plan, six-month plan,
and a one-month plan of progressively smaller goals that you should reach to achieve your
lifetime goals. Then create a daily To-Do List of things that you should do today to work
towards your lifetime goals.

Further Goal Setting Tips

The following broad guidelines will help you to set effective, achievable goals:
 State each goal as a positive statement - Express your goals
 Be precise: Set precise goals, putting in dates, times and amounts so that you can
measure achievement.
 Set priorities - When you have several goals, give each a priority. This helps you to
avoid feeling overwhelmed by having too many goals.
 Write goals down - This crystallizes them and gives them more force.
 Keep operational goals small - Keeping goals small and incremental gives more
opportunities for reward.
 Set performance goals, not outcome goals - If you base your goals on personal
performance, then you can keep control over the achievement of your goals, and draw
satisfaction from them. In business, things you may not be able to control could be
unexpected effects of government policy. In sport, they could include bad weather,
injury, or just plain bad luck.
 Set realistic goals - It's important to set goals that you can achieve. All sorts of
people (for example, employers, parents, media, or society) can set unrealistic goals
for you. It's also possible to set goals that are too difficult because you might not
appreciate either the obstacles in the way.

VISION BOARD

You are to create a vision board, a picture display of how you would like your life to look in
the future. You can do this on your Macbook or use magazine cut outs. Dream big!

Your Vision Board will then be displayed in a class mural.

4
To get you started write down some things you would like to include in your vision board:

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST REQUIREMENTS

Expressions of Interest (EOI) are generally used for non-ongoing positions, where a person is
needed to fill a job for a short length of time. This document is an alternative to writing a fully-
fledged selection-criteria response. It is much more a selling document, one that captures
your strengths and experience in a way that convinces the reader that you will make a
valuable contribution. People are asked to prepare a written response, usually with a
maximum length specified, such as 2 pages, and attach a CV.

The expression of interest is based on a short job description which will outline what the
person is to do and the experience and skills needed to carry out the role.

Your expression of interest should be written around three sections:

1. A short opening paragraph that makes a succinct case for why you should be
considered for the vacancy, based on your portfolio of relevant skills, knowledge and
experience relevant to the roles.
2. Several example-based paragraphs which tell stories about how you have used your role-
related skills to deliver results. These examples should be written in SAO (situation,
action, outcome) format. Rather than taking criteria and skills separately, look for examples
that combine skills. For example, a story about project management might combine
communication with stakeholders, research and analysis, writing, team management.

10
3. A short closing paragraph that could indicate the contribution you wish to make and your
enthusiasm for this opportunity.

Note: you need to update and tailor your resume so that it complements your expression of
interest. Modified from - Dr Ann Villiers : http://www.selectioncriteria.com.au/

Activity: Go onto seek.com and look for an advertisement that requires an expression of
interest. In the space below write your expression of interest response:

Expression of interest: I am writing to express my interest as a secondary P.E/ health

teacher 2022

Dear Clarendon College

I consider myself the best candidate for this job because I am considered by many as the
best P.E teacher to ever grace this Earth. I have achieved A’s all through my Highschool
P.E classes and have completed a certificate 2 in Sport Coaching and a Certificate 4 in
Education Support. Meaning I am very versatile and a fantastic people person, which is
very easy to work in. I am also experienced with ICT skills and an amazing problem solver
allowing me to work very well in a team.

I was told to lead a group of year 8’s for the 2021 lightning carnival for the day, all the
students had fun and no-one got injured and they listened to all my instructions, at the end
of the day all the students said I was greatest of all time in teaching.

I am excited to work at Clarendon college and hope I can make the students excel in their
health and P.E studies.

Yours sincerely, Riggyan Kurrun
