Presentation
Definition
- Journalism is a term that refers to the collection,
preparation, and distribution of media or information to
the general public.

- It often discusses the current events that may be


happening within the country or world and covers a mass
range of topics from politics to entertainment.

- The mediums used to communicate the news/ current


events may come in print and electronic media such as
newspapers, magazines, books, blogs, webcasts, podcasts,
social networking and social media sites, and e-mail as
well as through radio, motion pictures, and television
Functions
1. Inform
- It serves as the main purpose of journalism.
- Aims to report all the news regarding current events and issues
within government politics, foreign affairs, weather, accident, business,
labor, education for the people.
2. Interpret
- Helps people have a clearer understanding of the current
matters.
- Aside from reporting facts on the matter, a journalist
should give details and background information as they
simplify and explain the issue for the benefit of others.
3. Entertain
- Can tackle other topics aside from very serious
matters.
- Mass media has a goal to also entertain others with
more leisurely focused material like: comic strips, sports
news, celebrity news, and etc.

4. Guide
- Influences its readers through the articles and media.
- Since the commentary of journalist also displays
different POVs and arguments, the masses consume the
information given to them and can act upon the
journalist's report based on their understanding.

1. Journalist have liberty to access public or private information as long as their
motive is acceptable, however in rare occasion, exemptions occur.
2. Journalist are allowed to disregard a case if it bothers his or her conscience or
convictions
3. Journalists have the right to receive enough and continuous job training
4. Journalists should gain something from work conditions

5. Journalists have the freedom to join professional organizations without


experiencing prejudice.
6. Journalists are to be morally and materially protected.
7. Journalists have all the power to refuse a command that is against their
collaborated company policy.
8. Editors have right to know what is going on in their company.

1. Revere the truth despite it being a
disadvantage in the journalists personal life .
2. Guard freedom of speech and information
3. Only announce facts that the main source is
known.
4. Cannot change important information in texts
or documents
5. Use reasonable method to get information,
pictures, or documents
6. Control one self to keep privacy of others(stalking)
7. Correct false information
8. Keep confidentiality for private information
9. Must not participate in plagiarism, acceptance of money in
exchange for a favor, and making false accusations to
ruin a reputation.
10. Must not act as a salesman or promoter
of a belief.
11. Follow editorial orders only from dependable
staffs and disregard outward pressure
Career Opportunities
in Journalism
The typical employers of those with a degree in
journalism are radio/television stations, magazine and
newspaper publishing companies, broadcast
companies, communication agencies, advertising and
marketing companies, etc.
1.Journalist
write, proofread, and edit articles and features. Their
articles and pieces are used in newspapers, radio, magazines,
television, etc.
2. Reporter
aim to keep the public informed and aware of current events,
news, and etc, giving updates and analyses on news. Unlike
journalists, a reporter only needs to relay news instead of
research and look for news stories.
3. Editors
proofread and correct grammatical errors, punctuation,
and spelling. Additionally, editors also give suggestions to
writers in terms of what is in a story and how a story is
written.
4. Public relations manager
create and maintain the public image of their client or
employer. They can be in charge of social media
management as well as in charge of creating
advertisements and promotions.
5. Political risk analyst
study how an area’s political system develops and
operates. They analyze trends relating to politics like
governments, political ideas, policies, foreign relations, etc.
Good Journalism
Practices
1. Report the truth

- The work should be accurate and truthful. The information


should also be reviewed twice before being published.

- Make sure to have reliable and trustworthy


information/sources.

- Deadlines are not an excuse for the inaccuracy of


information.

- Provide solid context for stories.

- Don’t plagiarize.
2. Balance the Potential Harm

- Be respectful of those being reported


about.

- Think of whether the public needs the


information.

- Think of the potential harm the work could


cause.

- Remember that although something may be


legal doesn’t mean it’s ethical.
3. be ethical
- Refuse bribes from others that may damage credibility.

- Be wary of sources offering information that might not


be credible.

- Try to avoid conflicts of interest.

- Report based solely on news and not advertisements.


4. Be accountable and transparent

- Respond to questions about the work.

- Properly acknowledge and correct mistakes.

- Follow the proper standards that are


expected.

- Expose unethical journalism.
