ECOSYSTEM 101 – WORKSHEET #2

NAME: Patricia Ann B. Ojeda DATE: 9/13/2022

YEAR & SECTION: BSN 2-Spcl INSTRUCTOR: PROF. JENNY CHUA, M.SC.

Directions. Answer each item concisely.

1. What is ecology?
- It is a subfield of biology that deals with the relations of organisms to one another and
also their interaction with the environment that surrounds them.

2. What is the biosphere? Does it include abiotic, biotic or both?

- Biosphere refers to the area of earth or region of earth possessing life. It is a
distinguishing feature of the earth from the other planets. It is part of earth that includes
all biological communities and their environment. It has both factors (biotic and abiotic).

4. Label each level of organization on the diagram above.

5. Explain the relationship between ecosystems and biomes.
- Ecosystem is a community that includes biotic and abiotic factors. A biome is the
organisms occupying or inhabiting the ecosystem. In other words, a biome is part of a
biotic factor in an ecosystem. The ecosystem is a large environment such as ocean or a
smaller particular environment such as soil in somebody’s yard. The biome would consist
of a very large variety of organisms. In the example of the ocean, from the blue whales to
the microscopic photosynthetic bacteria. Biomes of a particular soil may include smaller
mammals such as moles, but it would mainly include smaller worms (earthworms) to
vast numbers of microorganisms. Each of these ecosystems would have a unique biome.
Biomes also contribute to the flow of abiotic factors such as the water cycle and nitrogen
cycle.
-
6. Define the terms abiotic and biotic (within the Venn diagram below). Then use the terms in
the box to fill in the Venn diagram. List parts of the environment that consist of biotic factors,
abiotic factors, and some components that are a mixture of both.

Both

Biotic Abiotic
Factors Factors

7. Why are many ecological phenomena difficult to study?

- They occur over a long period of time and ovey large areas of waters/lands.

8. Why do ecologists make models?

- To gain an insight into the complex phenomenon

9. What do autotrophs do during photosynthesis?

- They use the light energy from the sun to convert it into carbon dioxide and water into
food and then they will release the oxygen.

10. Can some organisms survive without energy from the sun? Explain your answer.
- Yes, they are called chemosynthetic organisms because they can make food from
chemical compounds.

11. Can organisms create their own energy? Explain your answer.
- No, autotrophs are getting their energy from the sun (photoautotrophs) or in chemicals
(chemoautotrophs).
B. Complete the table about some of Earth’s major biomes.

Some Major Biomes

Biome Climate and Soil Plants and Animals

Tropical warm year-round with wet plants: tall, deciduous tree, succulents
deciduous forest and dry season; rich soil animals: undergo estivation and migration

Tropical plants: broadleaf evergreen and vines

rainforest animals: camouflage, use adaptation for
Hot and wet nutrient canopy
poor soil

Tundra cold, dark winters and short, plants: ground-hugging plants

soggy summers; permafrost animals: bird and mammals that can
tolerate the harsh condition

Temperate warm to hot summers, cold plants: grasses and herbs

grassland winters with fertile soil animals: grazing animals

Desert low precipitation with plants: short growth cycles, cactus/cacti

variables temperatures animals: adaptations to quickly lose body
heat and regulate body temperature
