A. Give at least 10 rules on pronoun antecedents and agreement with examples.


Rule 1. A pronoun and its antecedents must agree and it both should be singular or both be
should plural.
Examples: Singular - Vien finished by all her activities today.
Plural - The students finished their all activities today.
Rule 2. There are some indefinite pronouns that have a plural meaning, However, it should
be treated as grammatically singular.
Examples: Incorrect - Somebody has lost their money.
Correct - Somebody has lost his or her money.
Rule 3. When a compound antecedent is connected by or or nor or by either... or or
neither... nor, make sure that you make the pronoun agree with the nearer antecedent.
Examples: Neither Vien nor Penelope could take a bath on her own.
Either the boys or girls would wash their dishes.
Rule 4. Treat collective noun as singular unless the meaning is clearly plural.
Examples: Singular - The couple fulfilled its vows.
Plurals - The couple wrote their vows on a paper.
Rule 5. When compound antecedents are connected by and, treat it as plural.
Examples: Incorrect - Jack and Jill went up the hill where he or she can fetch a pail of water.
Correct - Jack and Jill went up the hill where they can fetch a pail of water.
Rule 6. A phrase or clause between the subject and verb does not change the number of
the antecedent.
Examples: The can of lima beans sits on its shelf
Rule 7. Compound subjects joined by and always take a plural referent
Examples: Julia and Lisa are practicing for their upcoming performance.
Rule 8. Collective nouns may be singular or plural, depending on meaning.
Examples: She made a cup of tea for the guest.
Rule 9. Titles of single entities take a singular referent.
Examples: The Philippines is known for its beautiful beaches.
Rule 10. Singular indefinite pronoun antecedents take singular pronoun referents.
Examples: Each of the students passed his or her assignments on time.
