i. Abstract
This study entitled “Effects of Covid-19 Pandemic on Grade-12 Online Sellers at Asian
Institute of Science and Technology (AISAT)”. The respondents are Grade 12 Senior High
school student of Asian Institute of Science and technology (AISAT), Baliwag, Bulacan.
Ages 16 to 21 and currently enrolled in the said institution. This research study aims to assess
and find out answers on different problems that people nowadays are encountering. The
researchers make sure all data are valid from survey questionnaire they’ve conducted. The
researchers used “Closed questions”, it provides ordinal data (which can be ranked). This
often involves using a continuous rating scale to measure the strength of attitudes or
emotions. (*1-5 ratings) 1- Strongly disagree, 2- Disagree, 3 – Neutral, 4- Agree, and 5-
Strongly Agree. This type of questionnaire is for research purposes only. The data gathered
from survey questonnaire were quantifiable and converted into percentage. The study
concludes that there are 57% percent who are strongly agree that being an Online Sellers is a
big benefit during quarantine, 56% percent are agree, 48% percent for Neutral, 85% percent
for those students who are Disagree, and percent for Strongly Disagree..

CHAPTER I – THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Online Business is any kind of businesses that includes about sharing information

through the use of internet. The exchanged of products and Services between individuals are

considered business. Those who have an online business called them as online seller. As

Corona Virus or Covid-19 spreads out, it affects the economy of every country. One of the

most affected is their businesses. What changes they encounter especially for the businessman

during this pandemic?

As of now, Covid-19 Pandemic rapidly changed their customer’s behaviour in buying

their necessities or needs every day. COVID-19 (Corona Virus) is an infectious disease. It is a

deadly type of virus. It has caused a worldwide pandemic of respiratory illness while online

sellers are those sellers who sells and put information online. An Online business includes the

process of buying and selling goods and services using the internet. At this time of pandemic,

most people need to make money, even students trying to find a way to help their parents in

sustaining for their everyday needs. There are positive and negative effects of covid-19

especially who are online sellers. It will find out on how they will surpass hindrances like

what steps they will take in able to attract their customers to buy their products. As people

living with this pandemic outbreak, it is very difficult to estimate its long-term effects.

Nobody can predict what will happen in the future. There were a lot of changes on how

a business will act on the community to make it productive in this time of pandemic and how

they consider consumer behavior in buying products. The pandemic were forced many

businesses to close, but most of them continue selling, continued doing their business through

the use of internet. Covid-19 may cause positive and negative effects on online sellers

especially for those students and online sellers at the same time, how they can manage to do

online selling while focusing on class. The COVID-19 pandemic change the whole world and

some of the other businesses went bankrupt. On the other hand, this situation also opens up a

new hope for others, especially for some working students because shopping's shift to online

and the most used communication platforms are Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and other

apps.

The worldwide pandemic had affected all aspects of human life but had greatly

affected the education and shopping system while people in general are concerned about the

growing pandemic, the youngest generations are particularly altering their purchasing

behaviors so many students have also entered the trade to sell on social media just to earn

money or income. The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a significant part of how economy will

conquer this kind of struggle and how to make it productive even this pandemic occurs.

The new normal of increased online business transactions there for many of students

have become online sellers. Here in the Philippines, Filipino internet users are spending more

time on social media, with 23% indicating an increased activity in their online shopping

activity. Technology has already transformed online business transactions into an infinite

marketplace. In conducting an online business has become more convenient and efficient for

both vendors and vendees. The COVID-19 pandemic has made this marketplace a more

obvious necessity. Online Sellers can post platforms through social media that will help them

to attract their customers in buying products.

Background of the Study

All people especially the community affected their businesses, a business which can

help to sustain their needs and increase their income. Online Sellers are also affected in a

negative way and also in positive way. Some of their positive results, online sellers can

communicate with their customers through online or using internet.

During this pandemic, there’s a required age to go to every establishments mostly here

in Baliwag in able to protect children and also senior citizen on getting this virus. All people

can be an online seller as long as they use technology or devices in interacting with their

customers. Based on research, Online Seller’s income and profit were increased because of

this pandemic. But this time, the researchers were focusing on grade 12 online sellers from

Asian Institute of Science and Technology Baliwag Branch (AISAT-BALIWAG). This study

was conducted by the researchers whose aims to understand and see the effects of this

pandemic in the online sellers. Through the use of surveys, serves as the evidence of the

researchers that they conducted this study in a fair way and only legit information were

gathered from their respondents.

This research was conducted due to the lack of information about the negative and

positive effects of this pandemic in online businesses. It will also give an answer how this

pandemic changed the cycle of economic growth and make it active in progress during

quarantine

Statement of the Problem

This research seeks to answer the general problem on the most common problems of
being an online seller encountered during quarantine in Baliwag, Bulacan.

General problem:

i. Does this pandemic create a big impact in business?

Specifically, it aims to measure the solution of these sub-problems:

i. Is Online Sellers increased their sales because of Covid-19 Pandemic?

ii. What are the benefits of using social media to interact with their customers?

iii. What are the disadvantages of being an online seller during this pandemic?

After this study, the researchers assumed the profits of each business were

increased. But the coronavirus, one of the deadliest known viruses, has taken

the lives of many in almost half of the country. This means that the country's

economic growth has slowed. It has shaken almost all types of business

including e-commerce business on a massive scale. Online businesses are also

affected. Therefore, the researchers assumed that this deadly virus will

seriously affect online businesses especially the demand of products and

increasing their sales.

 The Researchers are expecting to see the validity and a better outcome through

conducting surveys or giving questionnaires for this research about the effects

CHAPTER II – REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Related Literature

The author thought you might find this article interesting and can help to find out

answers. This kind of related literature is about the impact of Covid-19 Pandemic in online

Sellers. This articles shows that the coronavirus is pushing people to do online shopping and

will they continue doing online shopping when this plague is over. Online shopping is a

method of buying products through electronic devices such as mobile or computers by

using internet. People mostly prefer buying products by going physically in markets

rather than buying online it is because of various reasons and the prominent reason from

them is concerns of quality of products that people buy online this is what insist them

buying physically. Although there are several advantages of online shopping like less

expensive, time saving etc. but they are quality conscious. The world is facing one of the

worst disasters in the history. As the world is in the devastating situation and countries have

been put under lockdown, restrictions have been imposed on going out of homes,

arranging crowded events, going in markets, almost every business has been shut down in the

world in the wake of COVID-19 and people are stressed to stay in homes.

This related literature wants to give emphasis about the common problems that are

being encountered of being an online seller during covid-19 pandemic. There are some

adjustments and changes they must always consider in able for them to overcome their

problems in their business.

Related study

The aim of the research was to identify the effects of covid -19 pandemic to the online

sellers at Asian Institute of Science and Technology (AISAT) in Baliwag, Bulacan. Due to

people’s lack of knowledge on the effects of covid -19 pandemic to the online sellers, they

can’t able to determine if it is perfect for them to be online seller and if they will be

successful in their business during quarantine. The sample of the study consisted only of

Grade 12 Senior High School Students. A well- designed questionnaire for grade 12 students

about the effects of this pandemic to the online sellers were used in the collection of data.

Those data will be gathered only from the respondents of this research study.

The data or information was first collected using the Formsapps they’ve used and later

the researchers analyzed using different tools for quantitative method such as tables and

charts. The results showed that they were agreed that it’s a great opportunity to be an online

seller and most online sellers were successful right now during pandemic.

Most of the online sellers do some adjustments from this time of pandemic in able for

their online business become successful and productive and most likely the reason why they

become an online seller is they want to an extra income even they stayed at home.

The significance of this related study leads to the researchers to identify the possible

CHAPTER III – METHODS OF RESEARCH

Methodology of the study

The researchers conducted a quantitative research in which the results or data gathered

were formed into numbers and represented in numerically form. As mentioned by Leedy and

Ormrod (2001) alleged that “Quantitative research is specific in its surveying and

experimentation, as it builds upon existing theories”. Quantitative research begins with a

problem statement and involves the formation of a hypothesis, a literature review, and a

quantitative data analysis .Therefore, data are only based on the results of survey

questionnaires that will distributed to the respondents of this research study. The study also

used a descriptive method. According to Calderon (2008), as cited by Alberto et al

(2011), descriptive method is also known as statistical research, it describes

data and characteristics about the population or phenomenon being studied. This

research method is used for frequencies, averages and other statistical calculations .

Often the best approach prior to writing descriptive research, is conducting survey

investigation. DURING
A descriptive COVID-19
method PANDEMIC

online sellers. Technically, the method that was used answered the most common effects that

the online sellers of Baliwag, Bulacan are encountering.

Research Design

The researchers used a quantitative method. Ary (2010: 426) states that,

“Research design is the researcher’s plan of how to proceed to gain an understanding of

some group or some phenomenon in its context”. The researchers chose as their research

design of this research is descriptive design with qualitative approach. According to Gay

(1992: 217), descriptive research involves collecting data in order to test hypotheses or to

answer questions concerning the current status of the subject of the study. The study utilized

a survey questionnaire using FormsApps in able for the researchers to get the data they

needed to lead in possible solution in this study. The research questionnaire used a Likert

scale from their survey questionnaire to evaluate ratings and get numerical data. The

researchers chose to use non-experimental design or it can be called as descriptive research

design because it is only one under non-experimental design. There are many types of

descriptive design but the researchers decided to use survey in able for them to gather

information from their particular respondents. Through the help of survey, it can easily see

the exact results of this study through the help of opinions and knowledge from their

respondents about a certain topic or phenomenon. This type of research designs requires a

ONLINE

population thereforeDURING COVID-19
they can collect PANDEMIC
a large amount of information that is valid and

reliable. The advantage of a survey is it can be access through social media (websites, e-mail,

g-mail, messenger, facebook etc.) so it will only take a short period of time and it is a fast

way to get the results that you need to gather. A survey is less-cost, it is an inexpensive

method of conducting research especially in quantitative research. This kind of research

design has a big benefit for the researchers because these statement/questions are direct to the

point so they can visualize properly the data they’ve collected from their respondents.

Population of the study

The researchers used Stratified sampling to get number of population who will

participate in this research study. A stratified sampling is a method of population which can

be divided into sub-groups which called “strata” that is based on specific characteristics such

as gender, age, grade level and location. This type of sampling helps in choosing the size of

the population. They have chosen Grade 12 students from different strands.

Data collection procedure

The researchers chose a relevant topic that answers a relevant problem based on what

people face right now. There were some hindrances in which the researchers difficult to

choose as target respondents for their research. They formulated questionnaire and have it

answered by their respondents. These survey questionnaires will help the researchers to

collect valid and reliable data that will convert into numerical data they need. The

questionnaire that they implied is Closed Questions used to evaluate ratings (*1- Strongly

Disagree, 2- Disagree, 3- Neutral, 4- Agree, and 5- Strongly Agree). They based the questions

in their survey to the objectives and goals of the research which is to find out the possible

answer or solutions from the problem in their research study.

Review of Related Literature

According in the article of (Muhammad Kashif, Aziz-Ur-Rehman, and Muhammad

Kashan Javed, July 2020, Volume 03, p. 325), the coronavirus is pushing people to do online

shopping and will they continue doing online shopping when this plague is over. Online

shopping is a method of buying products through electronic devices such as mobile or

computers by using internet. People mostly prefer buying products by going physically

in markets rather than buying online it is because of various reasons and the prominent

reason from them is concerns of quality of products that people buy online this is what

insist them buying physically. Although there are several advantages of online shopping

like less expensive, time saving etc. but they are quality conscious. The world is facing

one of the worst disasters in the history. As the world is in the devastating situation and

countries have been put under lockdown, restrictions have been imposed on going out of

homes, arranging crowded events, going in markets, almost every business has been shut

down in the world in the wake of COVID-19 and people are stressed to stay in homes.

Hence people cannot go in markets for buying products, so this is probably pushing people to

do online shopping. Online shopping allows people to fulfill their needs even people were

markets. This research intends to investigate if

ASIAN INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND

coronavirus is pushing people do online shopping and it is also focused in this study to

know if the people will continue doing shopping online with the same rate as they are

doing now when the markets are closed and they are also strictly barred from going in
markets. Objectives The aim of this report is to know if the coronavirus is pushing

people to do online shopping besides this, it is also examined in this study that if people

will continue buying products online with the same rate in future when coronavirus is over.

According to the article of (Renz Homer S. Arreola, July 2020), social media and

virtual meetings, domestically and across the globe were become the “new normal” as people

strive to keep normalcy in their lives amid pandemic restrictions. Based on his research, here

in the Philippines, Digital 2020 April Statshot report by Hootsuite, social revealed that 64%

of Filipino internet users are spending more time on social media, with 23% indicating an

increased activity in their online shopping activity. With consumers resorting more to online

shopping amid pandemic restrictions, entrepreneurs have embraced the digital phenomenon

for online shopping even more. E-commerce websites such as Lazada and Shopee are at the

forefront of these online shopping platforms with expected surges in sales revenues in

millions of pesos. Technology has already transformed online business transactions into an

infinite marketplace where conducting business has become more convenient and efficient for

both vendors and vendees. The COVID-19 pandemic has made this marketplace a more

this surge in PANDEMIC

to remind online sellers of their tax obligations, with the Bureau of Internal Revenue’s (BIR)
ASIAN INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND

issuance of Revenue Memorandum Circular (RMC) No. 60-2020 entitled “Obligations of

Persons Conducting Business Transactions Through any Forms of Electronic Media and

Notice to Unregistered Businesses.” The Circular basically mandates all business owners
who are engaged in an online business platform in any form, whether digital or electronic, to

register their businesses with the BIR and pay taxes on their sales. Under this RMC, online

business entities and constituents are encouraged to register their businesses no later than July

31, 2020 to avoid penalties for late registration. In addition, they are encouraged to

voluntarily declare their past transactions, and pay the taxes due thereon, without

corresponding penalties if the declaration is done no later than July 31, 2020.

The above Circular is explicit that it covers not only partner sellers, but also other

stakeholders, such as the payment gateways, delivery channels, internet service providers, and

other facilitators. Do note that if online sellers are already registered with the BIR, but were

not previously doing business online, these online sellers should revise their certificates of

registration (with the BIR), to include “online selling”.
