Course Outline

Description: This course is designed to be an introduction to the metal shop for students with or without previous
experience. It will provide in depth knowledge of employability skills for industry jobs, an understanding of safe
shop practices, and basic metal work operations. These include hand tools, lathes, welding equipment, and creating
and interpreting plans and drawings.

Unit 1: Safe Shop Practices

- Safe and healthy work practices
- Safe use of hand tools
- Understand common Work Safe BC regulations with industry shops
- Identify common hand tools
- Knowledge of fire types and fire extinguisher use
- Understand typical causes of accidents
- Safe use of typical shop equipment such as grinders, drill presses, MIG welders and oxy acetylene welding

Unit 2: Design and Layout

- Draft (to scale) a drawing of a project you would like to build
- Orthographic projections of project (3 views)
- Measurement and accuracy
- Efficient use of materials
- Cost out project
- Understand how layout affects the end product

- Measurement tools such as tape measures and rulers
- Efficient layout techniques
- Identify common hand tools
- Safe and proper use of hand tools

Unit 4: Oxy-Acetylene Welding

- Identify all major components
- Understand safe operating shop conditions
- Identify common tasks (Welding, Cutting, Brazing)
- Understand filler rod types for different types of metal
- Understand how layout affects the end product

- Identify all major components including Gas settings
 - Understand safe operating shop conditions
- Identify common weld faults
- Understand filler rod types for different types of metal

unsafe, destructive, etc. If I were your employer, I would fire you.
Achieving an “A” does not guarantee a “G” work habit. It is possible to receive both an “A” and an “N”, or an “F”
and a “G”.

ABSENCES:
- Absences DO NOT excuse any assignments
- Shop time can be excused ONLY when:
o Leave me an email BEFORE the absence, OR
o A note, from home, is brought THE DAY you return
- It is the STUDENT’S responsibility to keep up with all missed assignments and quizzes.
- Missed shop time can be made up at lunch or after school, by making arrangements with the instructor.
