This lesson plan is for a 10th grade geometry class and focuses on explaining how the criteria for triangle congruence (ASA, SAS, and SSS) follow from the definition of congruence using rigid motions. Students will first explore triangle congruence proofs on the CanFigureIt website. They will then write or screenshot their proofs and submit them. The teacher will discuss some examples and have students explain the justifications. Finally, the teacher will connect the ideas and explain what proves triangles are congruent as an exit ticket for students. The goal is for students to apply their knowledge of congruence and proofs to triangles at higher levels of thinking through this exploratory social activity supported by the online content.

Content Area Suitable for a 10th Grade Geometry Class Content Standards MGSE9-12.G.CO.8 Explain how the criteria for triangle congruence (ASA, SAS, and SSS) follow from the definition of congruence in terms of rigid motions. (Extend to include HL and AAS.) Technology ISTE Standards: Standards 1.1.c – Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways. 1.4.d – Students exhibit a tolerance for ambiguity, perseverance, and the capacity to work with open-ended problems. 1.5.c – Students break problems into component parts, extract key information and develop descriptive models to understand complex systems of facilitate problem-solving. Integrated CanFigureIt.com Technology Reference or https://canfigureit.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/ Supporting CanFigureIt_Triangles_lesson-plan-1.pdf Resources This resource was used as an inspiration for my lesson plan. If I can log in and get an account as a teacher on CanFigureIt.com I will definitely seek to use this in my field placement next week! Bloom’s Taxonomy Remembering Levels Understanding Applying Integration Level This particular lesson is a LoTi Level 3. I believe it could be adapted into a higher LoTi level with some minor adjustments to the conclusion of the lesson. Universal Design This technology is beneficial for the UDL because it can offer different Rationale means of representation and expression for the students. Students may select the claims they wish to justify. The students will be offered 2 different formats for their justification. One can be through screenshotting the finished proof on CanFigureIt.com. The second will be writing down their proofs on physical paper. Both of these will be uploaded to a word document. If students do not wish to express their answers through writing. They will be responsible for presenting the other students proofs out loud, and justifying the claims made. This gives students multiple means of expression for their answers. This content will also be taught using different forms of representation. One will be through helpful videos on CanFigureIt.com. The instructor will also teach audibly and visually after the exploration section. After the direct instruction (or recap) the students will have the opportunity to re-explore. The website is more tactile in nature because you can select angle by clicking them or play around with different possibilities. Lesson Idea The standards will be taught first through an exploration of the CanFigureIt congruence proofs. Students will explore the proofs and make connections before the teacher expressly talks about triangle congruence proofs. The students have knowledge of congruence and proofs, so the only new concept is applying these to triangles. The exploration will begin with the teacher giving instructions to explore the proof numbers on the board. The students will be allowed to converse and work in groups. Once they feel confident with about 2-3 proofs, they will screenshot or write down their proofs and submit them to a class word document folder. The teacher will then select a few of the examples to discuss and justify. The students who wish to express their knowledge verbally will go over the proofs with the class and explain if they think the proofs are justified or not. The class will conclude with the teacher connecting ideas the students share and explaining the main objective of the lesson. That is, what proves triangles are congruent? The students will reflect upon this question and submit their answers as an exit ticket for the class. This will inform the teacher where the class is at or what they need extra assistance/differentiation on. Since the majority of this lesson is social and exploratory, the goal will be for the students to reach higher levels of thinking. The online content will be able to answer the simple questions students often ask, so they can dig in deeper to the content. Design Reflection These activities will hopefully allow the students to access deeper levels of understanding since they are exploratory in nature. As I planned this for introducing a new concept, there is plenty of room to grow with this subject. The following few lessons could cover the triangle congruence theorems and congruent parts theorems. I do believe that other low-tech ATs like physical manipulatives could help with this project.
