Brief on WSS FROM SARKAI, LAWAGHAR TO DAWAR AND KARAK

CITY
Tehsil: Karak
District: Karak
ADP NO.250 (2021-22)

A) LOCATION
The project area is located in District Karak of Province Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The location of KP Province and that of
District Karak is shown in the Figure.

Source of the project is Sarki Lawagher Dam which lies at

33.0440862N, 71.1890243E
B) HISTORY & DESCRIPTION OF THE SCHEME
In Pakistan, water resources crises specifically ground
water sources are under severe threat both in quantity and

1
quality. The ground water is stored in the pores of soil,
through infiltration of surface water flows over the ground,
and, its exhaustive use, due to urbanization and
industrialization, the ground water source is under stress.
As a result, it is being depleted at a rate of 0.0131 to 1.68
m/year, across the country. Due to massive ground water
extraction and decline of aquifer recharge, the quality of
water is being affected.

Public Health Engineering Division (PHED) Karak,

Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the major service
provider of water supply and sanitation in the areas falling
under its jurisdiction. PHED is responsible for planning,
designing, construction, operation & maintenance of
necessary infrastructure for provision of safe drinking water
and sanitation facilities to the beneficiaries. In the said
areas, there are various schemes based on tube wells,
installed by PHE department, however most of these are
either nonfunctional due to one or other reasons or cannot
be operated due to low voltage or continuous load
shedding. Therefore, the existing groundwater sources are
not in a position to fulfill drinking water requirements or
groundwater is under stress to meet the projected water
demand. Karak city is divided into four population zones
based upon elevation. At present 100’000 Gallon water is
being served to Karak City from another source. i.e Zabi
Dam which does not meet the total demand of the city.
2
Therefore, objective of this project is to utilize the reliable
water source facility available in the form of water storage
dam to ensure smooth provision of drinking water to un-
served and under-served population.

L) ISSUES & CONSTRAINTS
Locals of town Sarki Lawagher and nearby areas are continuously reluctant
about the execution of the scheme saying that since water pipeline is passing
through their lands therefore PHE should fulfil their water demands before
serving to the Karak City. To resolve this issue, the whole scenario was
brought in the knowledge of Civil Administration of the District Karak after
which a series of dialogues were held in the presence of worthy Deputy
Commissioner and District Police Officer Karak. As of now all efforts
remained unsuccessful in this regard.
