Instruction regarding questions

Answer all questions
Figures in the right-hand margin indicate marks.
All symbols carry the usual meaning. Assume a standard value for any missing data.

Q.No. Questions Marks

1 Explain the Dynamic braking of the series motor along with torque-speed characteristics 2
2 Explain the two quadrants of regeneration operation for Lift applications 2
3 Explain the brief performance characteristics of single-phase semi-converter fed 2
separately excited dc-motor when an active load is connected
4 A 230V, 50Hz, ac supply is connected to a semi converter along with wave connected series 2
motor of four poles and the motor is operating in ripple current mode. The value of mc-
type voltmeter as connected across the motor is 150V for the firing angle of 60 degrees.
Assume here, the speed, residual flux per pole, number of coils are 1000rpm, 2mWb, and
200, respectively. Find the extinction angle?
5 Explain merits of comparative analysis of series motor drive over separately excited 2
6 A separately excited d.c. motor is rated at 10 kW, 240 V, 1000 r.p.m. and is supplied with 3
power from a fully controlled, single-phase bridge rectifier. The power supply is sinusoidal
and rated at 240 V, 50 Hz. The motor armature resistance is 0.4217 ohms and the motor
constant is 2 volt seconds/radian. Some additional inductance is included in the armature
circuit to ensure continuous conduction but its value is not known. Calculate the speed,
power factor, and efficiency of operation for SCR firing-angles 0° and 20° if the load torque
is constant.

8 From Fig., draw all current and voltage waveforms 2
from the source and load side and find the average
voltage across the load.
Assume here,
(1) Thyristor 3 is short-circuited
(2) Thyristor 2 is open circuited

9 Find the mentioned points A, B, C, and D in Fig. are 4

stable or unstable along with a brief explanation

10 From Fig., draw all current and voltage 2

waveforms from the source and load side and find
the average voltage across the load.
Assume here,
(1) Diode 3 is open circuited
(2) Diode 2 is short-circuited

11 From Fig. of Q8, when a diode is placed instead of Thyristor 4. Assume here the current is 6
continuous.
(a) Sketch output voltage waveform for firing angle of 30°
(b) Obtain an expression for the average output voltage.
(c) For an ac source voltage of 230 V, 50 Hz, and firing angle of 60°, find the average
output current and power delivered by the motor in case, load consists of Ra = 5
ohm, La = 8 mH, and E =100V.
