Designing Your Dream House 3

Introduction

If you are an adult, you’ve probably lived in many different apartments and
houses in your lifetime, some more desirable than others. While most are quite
livable, few are what we would call ideal. But what if you could actually build your
dream house? If cost were no object and the only building restriction was that
you only use the very best materials.

Would you take the project on seriously and really dream big, putting
significant thought into it? What if time were not an issue, you had unlimited
resources, and you had access to the best designers and craftsmen? Does this
sound like an unrealistic pipe dream?

Well, if you are a believer in Christ, it’s not a dream at all; as a matter of fact,
it’s a mandate from God. This is a reality, not a pipe dream, and the best part is…
the building project is not only funded completely by God but the structural
framework is taking place behind the scenes and right now.

Seeing the Big Picture

When we look at our lives we usually see a hodgepodge of independent
decisions and unrelated circumstances that take place over time. Sometimes
things work out better than others. Occasionally we benefit from our actions and
decisions though more often than not, we don’t. Life is all about dealing with
everyday circumstances and surviving to do battle again with another set of
challenges the next day. We make some long-term plans and work toward our
goals as best we can, but realize that life doesn’t always work out the way we
would like. Some days are more challenging than others and most days pass by
without making much impact on our lives.

But as a believer in Jesus Christ, if you could see these everyday events
through God’s eyes you would realize that your life is not at all as disjointed as it
seems. Every day is actually just as important as another and all days have an
impact on your future. What you would see is that each independent
circumstance is really part of a carefully orchestrated building process and that
the decisions and responses you are making to seemingly random events will
have a collective, profound, and eternal consequence. Your daily decisions and
actions are actually determining what your eternal position and future
responsibilities will look like. Would you be more careful about your actions and
more calculated about your decisions if you could actually see the structure that
those actions are building? Maybe its time to put your spiritual eyes to work and
see what your actions and decisions are producing.

Every Day is a Test

The decisions you make and the actions you take each day of you life are
literally shaping the structure of your eternal dwelling. The level to which you
deal with everyday life situations in this life will be the gauge by which God will
evaluate your position and dwellings in the next life. He designed and equipped
you to deal with each situation that arises and expects you to look to Him for
guidance. Your level of response to His “leading” will determine the “house” you
are building and how competent you are to serve Him in His kingdom.

He designed your future place and position in His kingdom long before your
birthdate here on Earth. He created you with specific talents and gifts that
uniquely prepare you to deal with every situation you will encounter in this life.
God designed you to be totally fulfilled by life lived in accordance with His will.
There is simply no room in your being for more contentment than this.

Happiness and thrill are temporary emotional states that occur occasionally in
human life and are the closest things that Satan can offer to God’s everlasting
rewards of spiritual joy and contentment. Knowing that we are functioning as
fulfillment agents for God’s will delivers an internal and eternal glow and purpose
to our inner being that cannot be matched by anything Satan has to offer.

We are spiritual beings who enjoy fellowship with and within our spiritual
family. Fellowship is the word we use for a spiritual state that has much more
meaning than the dictionary can deliver. Living in a state of fellowship with our
God, made possible by the sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ and through the
guidance of the Holy Spirit is the realization of the very purpose for which we
were created.

2 Corinthians 5:1
For we know that if the earthly house of our tabernacle be dissolved, we
have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens.

1 Peter 2:2-5
As newborn babes, long for the spiritual milk which is without guile, that ye
may grow thereby unto your destiny; if ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious:
unto whom coming, a living stone, rejected indeed of men, but with God elect,
precious, ye also, as living stones, are built up a spiritual house, to be a holy
priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus
Christ.

1 Corinthians 1:8b-17
…every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.
For we are laborers together with God: you are God's husbandry, you are God's
building. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise
master builder, I have laid the foundation, and another builds thereon. But let
Herb Paynter
Designing Your Dream House 6

every man take heed how he builds thereupon. For other foundation can no man
lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones,
wood, hay, stubble; Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall
declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's
work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon,
he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer
loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God
dwells in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for
the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

John 14:2-3
In my Father’s house are many mansions (living spaces; rooms); if it were
not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and
prepare a place for you, I come again, and will receive you unto myself; that
where I am, there ye may be also.

Ephesians 2:10
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which
God afore prepared that we should walk in them.

Romans 14:10
But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy
brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:10-11
Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted
of him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every
one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done,
whether it be good or bad.

What you are doing with your thought life, your investments, your
conversations, and your overall behavior are bearing witness to God and others
about your commitment to honor Christ. There is a payday coming at the
Judgment Seat of Christ where all believers will be rewarded openly for what they
have done in private, and you will live in and with that reward forever. Heaven
will not be the same for all believers and the clock of your life is ticking. Take life
seriously while you still can.

A Word About This Current World

“This world is not my home, I’m just passing through

My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue
The Angels beckon me from Heaven's open door
And I can't feel at home in this world anymore”

“How can God allow this world to be so out of control?” I’ve heard the
question asked dozens of times very recently. While I have wondered the same
thing in times past, I have to remind myself that what we see happening in the
world today was prophesied in the Bible thousands of years ago. Most of us
believers have heard sermons and Bible studies about “the end times” for years
but never expected to personally be here when those times appear. Well, here’s
the news… they’re here.

We can’t look to God and ask Him to make this world a peace-honoring place
when we have ignored the Prince of Peace and rejected His will for millennia. But
what we can do is look at this world from a different angle; a believers’
perspective, and see the current black cloud from the other side.

The Bible speaks unmistakably about our current world condition and gives
us a clear view of why everything is falling apart. This is no accident that we need
to remind the Lord about. Rather, it is the beginning of the fulfillment of a plan
that God put in place thousands of years ago. The truth is… we haven’t been
watching the signs He has given to us very closely or taken them very seriously.

Let’s keep in mind that God’s purpose for creating man was to establish His
kingdom on Earth. The Kingdom of God was brought to Earth with His act of
creation. Adam, as God’s chosen governor over His creation was to rule over all
life, and do so in total obedience to God’s will. Adam’s seed was to multiply and
remain in His service, and in personal relationship with God forever. When
Lucifer deceived man, causing him to sin, that position and relationship was lost.
While man’s sin altered God’s order, Lucifer would not dissuade God’s plan, he
would merely disrupt it temporarily. God announced His redemption plan
immediately following man's sin.

This redemption plan was designed to restore the entire Kingdom of God back
under God’s original specifications, both spiritually and physically. The entire
Earth was contaminated when man sinned and would have to be rebuilt in every
way. Satan would have to be defeated, sin would have to be extinguished, and
man would have to be restored to a holy, righteous, and obedient relationship
with God before he could be trusted to again govern over creation as he was
originally designed. Sin is not like a stain on a tablecloth that can be addressed
with a simple cleansing, it is a spiritual disease that poisoned and contaminated
every aspect of creation. Rooting out the cancer of sin from the world system was
Herb Paynter
Designing Your Dream House 8

not a trivial pursuit. The resistance to this restoration has been great from the
beginning.

The plan of redemption is usually viewed as a single payment made by Christ

intended to clear man of guilt and guarantee him a home in heaven. Satan has
promoted this simplistic view from the beginning, and mankind has bought into
the deception. The truth is, the redemption of God’s kingdom involves restoring
every aspect of the contaminated creation. Satan has managed to minimize both
the offense and the damage caused by his act of sabotage in the Garden of Eden.

This simplistic portrayal of Christianity has resulted in shallow convictions

and marginal personal investments by many believers. While the gift of God is
eternal life, the purpose of redemption was to reshape a sinful world back into a
spanking-clean spiritual machine. God only delivers His blessings through clean
vessels and sin in a believer’s life is the dirt that grinds the gears to a halt.
Mankind has moved steadily away from God’s law and His patience is running
thin. God is Sovereign and His will is immutable. The earthly kingdom that
reverted back to Satan after the fall will be reclaimed by Christ at the end of this
current age and the clock is ticking down to a climactic end.

The process of restoring the Kingdom of God on Earth is complex but well
documented and predicted in the Bible. Students of the prophecies of Ezekiel,
Zechariah, Isaiah, Daniel, and Revelation know of the sensational nature of
events in the “last days” but are less familiar with the signs that lead up to those
final days. What we see unfolding before our eyes today is the rapid fulfillment of
many of those predicted events. The cumulative nature of these signs reveal that
God is now rapidly closing the door on Satan’s iron-fisted rule of this world. The
Kingdom of God is indeed closer today than at any time in history simply because
sin is running rampant in a godless world.

Unfortunately, the Christian church has been blinded to these signs over the
years and is sadly out of touch with this timetable unfolding before them. The
spiritual state of most churches in the current age is best described in the letter to
the church of Laodicea.

Revelation 3:14-22
“And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘The words of the Amen,
the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation.

“‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were
either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will
spit you out of my mouth. For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need
nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.

I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich,
and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your
nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see.

Herb Paynter
Designing Your Dream House 9

Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the
door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. The one who
conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and
sat down with my Father on his throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what
the Spirit says to the churches.’”

The state of Christianity today is one of comfortable complacency. We are

comfortable in the security of our salvation and blind to our personal calling
(more later). God’s call is for obedience to His will and personal sacrifice. Our
comfort in God’s grace has clouded our understanding of His command for Holy
justice. As such, the church is neither aware of how to “hear” personal
assignments and they aren’t watching the signs of the times as closely as they
should. Because of this complacency, the church is suddenly alarmed at the
social, political, and cultural upheaval that is cropping up both within America
and throughout the rest of the world.

What we need now more than ever is to realize that our time on this planet is
very short and that our personal ministry is critically connected to our personal
destiny. While our destination (heaven) is secure, our destiny (position in
Christ’s kingdom) is not. Believers are here on Earth for a purpose; God’s
purpose, and that purpose unfolds every day as revealed by the Holy Spirit.

The Urgency of the End Times

Philippians 4:6-7
In nothing be anxious; but in everything by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God,
which passes all understanding, shall guard your hearts and your thoughts in
Christ Jesus.

If we are honest about it, life here on Earth has become very unsettling and
even scary. The peace that passes all understanding spoken of in Scripture is
steadily diminishing from our lives. We are anxious, and nervous, and for good
reason! The world order has broken down and seems to be spinning out of
control.

Civil unrest, wars, starvation around the world, racial conflicts, disease and
pandemics, distrust in authority, personal insecurity, political upheaval, financial
collapse, insecurity and social disruption are just a few of the common issues that
dominate the news every night. I could continue this description for another two
paragraphs without much effort.

Herb Paynter
Designing Your Dream House 10

What’s worse, no one seems to believe that any of these situations are
improving. The whole world seems to be failing right in front of our eyes. Even
our right to assemble and minister to each other has been removed. It’s almost as
though this is a pre-designed and well timed social collapse happening all around
the globe. What’s happening, and why? Does God care? Is He listening?

The simple answer to all these questions is yes. God is not only listening, this
is His plan. Scripture makes it clear that what we are seeing is evidence of
Scripture being fulfilled as it has been clearly prophesied. God’s redemption plan
involves the reclamation of the entire earthly kingdom; a return to the original
order set up at creation. The restoration of the kingdom involves the re-
establishment of the God-Christ-man-creation order of command. We refer to
this time as The Millennial Reign of Jesus Christ. Believers of all ages will be
assessed for their obedience to the Holy Spirit’s leading in their personal lives.

Before this can happen, both unbelieving Israel and the heathen world will be
judged and experience the extreme wrath of God for their rejection of the
Messiah. This time is called the Time of Great Tribulation. The entire chapter of
Matthew 24 describes this horrible time that will come upon the whole world.
The events we see happening all over the globe are (most likely) evidence of the
devastating events that will precede this Great Tribulation. While many other
events must occur before the actual seven-year period, the seeds of these events
are obviously sprouting now.

Prior to the most devastating last half of this Tribulation period, believers will
be removed from the Earth and joined in the air with the Lord Jesus Christ,
announced by the sound of the trumpet of the Lord. Believers will be removed
from the Earth during this judgment but will be attending their own judgment;
the Judgment Seat of Christ. While the Judgment Seat (Bema) will not concern
their debt of sin, it will review their individual obedience to their personal
assignments delivered after they accepted Christ as their Savior.

What all this means (in a very condensed nutshell) is that THESE times we
are living in (and through) are the precursor of Christ’s second coming. We are to
take these last days of our earthly assignment VERY seriously; more seriously
than ever before. We must reckon this life and the time we have left in it for the
purpose and ministry they are designed to be. I’ll address our God-Assignments
next.

Here’s a list of events that indicate that we have indeed entered the “end
times.” Eschatology is the study of the end times, and the events that will occur
just prior to these end times are specific. A very brief list of these events/
conditions is mentioned here.

• The return of the Jews to Israel. Ezekiel 11:17, Amos 9:14, Isaiah 43:5-6
• Kingdom will rise against kingdom (racial conflicts and wars). Matthew 24:6
• One world government (New World Order- global alliance). Rev 13:7-8; 17:12
Herb Paynter
Designing Your Dream House 11

• Famines and diseases- (Global Pandemic). Revelation 6:8

• Godless nations and governments. 2 Timothy 3:1-8
• A unified league of nations, rise of global leader (Anti-Christ). Daniel 7:24
• Mark of (identity with the Beast)- Buying and selling restrictions- Rev 13:17
• Rebuilding of the Temple in Israel. Ezekiel 434-7
• Apostasy- Departure from the faith (lax biblical teaching)- 1 Timothy 4:1
• Persecution for the faith- Matthew 10:29
• Strange signs in the heavens-

One thing is for certain in the near future; your faith will be tested and your
convictions will be challenged. We see this in our world already, those who
proclaim their belief in Christ and their allegiance to live by the mandates of
Scripture are already being labeled as science deniers and unintelligent. Society is
quickly turning completely away from moral and spiritual absolutes and insisting
that “religious zealots” adhere to socially deviate standards. You will suffer for
your faith.

I expect shortly to see a mandate that “for the sake of public health and
safety,” all persons will have to receive some form of virus vaccine which could
very well contain substances and/or DNA-altering mechanisms. To refuse could
deny purchase of food, social interaction, and severe travel restrictions.

So what are believers to do as we see these events occurring? Are we to simply

hunker down and deal with the coming persecution, or is there something
specific we are called to do? Glad you asked. Let’s dig into that now…

Herb Paynter
Designing Your Dream House 12

The Chosen, The Anointed, and The Predestined

Some branches of Christianity view God’s “calling” and “choosing” to refer to
personal salvation, teaching that God sovereignly selects certain individuals to go
to heaven while “not so fortunate” others go directly to Hell. This
misinterpretation of God’s word not only distorts God’s clear message of free will
and personal redemption, it also misses the truth about God’s calling of
individual believers for personal ministry assignments.

Actually, the way I read my Bible, God chooses all believers to be involved in
daily ministry of all sorts.

He does this by directives and assignments into our minds concerning things
we should accomplish or get involved with. These thoughts are usually dismissed
as “good ideas” that we take personal credit for and thus don’t take too seriously.
Many times these God Assignments don’t even get scribbled on a to-do list. In
truth, God speaks to every child regularly about personal God-Assignments.

Throughout Scripture we see that Prophets, Evangelists, and other spiritual

leaders clearly state that they have been “called” to be prophets, evangelists, and
leaders, and we take it for what it says; God spoke to individuals, giving them
license and authority to act in His name.

While I have created a detailed study on this topic, I’ll briefly mention that
Scripture clearly speaks of believers being ordained (set aside, blessed) to specific
duties. These duties relate to their destiny, rather than their destination.
Believers are not selectively chosen to go to heaven or hell but they are
predestined with God Assignments that they are to carry out during their lifetime
that will affect how they will live out their eternal life.

The word predestined as it is presented in Ephesians simply means that God

preordained something; He deliberately chose and purposed something to
happen by the declaration of His immutable will. There is no hermeneutical basis
for viewing predestined to refer to any choosing of individuals to go to Heaven
(or not). However, there are innumerable instances where God chooses
individuals to participate in His plan in specific ways and He rewards them when
they do so. Period.

Herb Paynter
Designing Your Dream House 13

Time Appointments

God doesn’t wait for an appropriate time to trigger His plan, He triggers
specific times to enact His plan. Another way to express this is that He
predestines certain activities. God’s plan is rolled out according to His divine will
and on His schedule. Each member of the human race was predestined to show
up on planet Earth at a specific date. And this God-scheduling doesn’t stop there.

God also predestines each personal assignment given to His children. What
we consider to be random occurrences and remarkable coincidences are simply
evidences of God’s scheduling process. While He doesn’t force believers to act
according to His plan, He does give them opportunities to participate in HIs plan.
And when they choose to participate with Him, they are rewarded for their
obedience.

Never forget that all believers are called to be Ambassadors for Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:17-22
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed
away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ
reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in
Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses
against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we
are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you
on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

An Ambassador is a personal representative for the leader of a country

(President, King, etc.), who speaks with the authority of that leader. The Leader
typically dispatches his ambassador to a foreign land to deliver messages and
accomplish specific tasks. The Ambassador doesn’t dream up his assignments,
they come directly from the leader and are official state business, as if the leader
himself were personally involved. As Christ’s Ambassadors, we are expected to
listen for our instructions and to carry them out with purpose and urgency.
Christianity is not a passive organization, it is a living organism designed to
operate in unity and purpose.

God Assignments: Nudges, Pushes, and Shoves

These GAs are usually not earthshaking issues that we would immediately
recognize as being spiritual ministries, but they are indeed personal assignments
that God desires to minister through each of us. I refer to GAs in three states of
urgency… nudges, pushes, and shoves, depending on how critical the assignment
might be. These nudges may seem insignificant to us, but in God’s bigger picture
they are all important. That simple direction to smile at a passer-bye may seem
silly, but it might just be just the right time that someone needs to see it. Never
underestimate the ministry (yes, a smile can be a ministry) opportunities you get.

God doesn’t look around for willing volunteers and then try to find something
meaningful for them to do. He designed each man from the get-go for a very
unique purpose; His purpose. We were all designed to achieve something special
in this life. Your life is no accident. God not only designed you for a purpose, he
uniquely equipped you to accomplish that purpose. And if you are listening
closely to the Holy Spirit’s guidance, your purpose will become clear every day.

Psalms 37:4
Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Proverbs 16:3
Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.

Both of these verses guarantee that God will both shape the desire and reveal
His purpose to those who focus on Him for guidance. God’s purpose for each
individual is so unique that only in its discovery can there be total human
fulfillment. Humans do not have the ability to shape their own purpose. Each of
us were born with a divine purpose specifically tailored to our god-given intellect,
personality, and talent package.

The godless world denies this unique life-plan, embracing instead self
realization, positive thinking, and even good vibrations. Humanism is the belief
that all personal direction is guided by internal human consciousness.

Herb Paynter
Designing Your Dream House 15

By Design
Your purpose in life will be revealed to you through God’s Holy Spirit to your
human spirit. This purpose transfer is accomplished through the quiet stillness of
your thought life. Those “good ideas” you’ve had in life were actually directives
from God. You’ve been getting these daily assignments from Him all your life, you
just didn’t know they originated from God. He has had your best interest in mind
all along because it is in His best interest for you to succeed. His master plan
includes the directed activity of His creation. The cycle of success is reciprocal;
He wins when you accomplish your divine purpose in life and you realize
personal fulfillment when you serve that purpose.

The following verse reveals the Apostle Paul’s understanding that through his
life in Christ, God had a purpose for him that reached beyond the gift of his
personal salvation.

Philippians 3:12-14
Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I
follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of
Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one
thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto
those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high
calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Paul recognized both his personal purpose in Christ (that for which also I am
apprehended of Christ Jesus and the high calling of God in Christ Jesus) and the
process through which he continued to receive his personal assignments (those
things which are behind and those things which are before).

Colossians 1:29
To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in
me mightily.

Realizing your potential in life begins when you understand that God created
a purpose for you even before He created a you. Your assignments existed before
you existed! Your earthly purpose is the very reason you were created. Your
earthly assignments were designed to fulfill your purpose in this life and to
prepare you for the life to come.

This life is on-the-job training that is mentored personally by God’s Holy

Spirit. Each assignment you are given is a unique learning exercise designed to
fulfill your unique purpose and position in His plan.

Your assignments are not mere random acts of kindness type of works, they
are specific exercises designed to prepare you for your ultimate position in God’s
eternal kingdom.

Herb Paynter
Designing Your Dream House 16

Psalm 139:13-16
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's
womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not
hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the
depths of the earth.

Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every
one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of
them.

God’s plan preceded His creation. He first created a need before He created
you to meet that need. And, your obedience to your earthly assignments was
actually known by Him even before you were born.

This is a difficult concept for humans to grasp because we live our lives in a
linear fashion; one day at at time. God lives in the eternal present. He doesn’t
predetermine your obedience, but He does predetermine your assignment in
eternity. God sees the future and past simultaneously.

The truth is: God’s foreknowledge allows Him to know those individuals who
will accept His Son as Messiah just as He knows who will accept their
assignments in faith, believing that God will enable them to achieve those
assignments. Yes, God knows ahead of time those who will accept their
assignments and who will not! Your earthly life-course is not a rigged race, it is a
course that you are intended to win. Through the enabling power of the Holy
Spirit, the course is yours to run and to win.

Not every assignment will be a spiritual one nor will it be life shaking, but
every godly thought must be recognized as coming from God. Failure to credit
God with His direction is a failure of our faith, and will result in a failure of the
assignment.

Spiritual Direction
There are only two sources of thoughts that enter the believer’s mind; the god
of this world and the God of the Universe. Satan has access through the believer’s
old nature while the Holy Spirit delivers truth through the new nature. It is folly
to believe that thoughts originate from within ourselves. Scripture notes clearly
that Satan placed the doubt (thought) in Eve’s mind in the Garden of Eden. She
chose to believe the thought that Satan had delivered to her.

Humans possess the ability to reason and the authority to make decisions but
we must realize that uncontrolled imaginations don’t come either ourselves or
God. Presuming that we were created as spontaneously cleaver creatures can get
us in trouble. We are “choosers” and have the volitional ability to make decisions.
While we want to believe that human beings are basically good, Scripture doesn’t
validate this sentiment...

Genesis 6:5
And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that
every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Romans 3:10-12
There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understands, there is
none that seeks after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together
become unprofitable; there is none that does good, no, not one.

The mind of man is the battleground for the soul; a battle that is waged for
your thought life thousands of times each day between God and Satan. The
struggle with sin is waged at the threshold of the mind. Both God and Satan
desire to influence your behavior and win your confidence. Remember, you are
responsible for your decisions and will be judged accordingly.

Hebrews 4:12-13
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged
sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and
marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is
no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes
of Him to whom we must give account.

The Chooser
The mind of man functions as the soul’s “chooser,” ultimately deciding the
worth and advantage of all arguments being presented. In its most basic function,
the human mind tends to choose the most persuasive argument presented and
thus, chooses whose slave it wants to be.

Romans 6:16
Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants
ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto
righteousness?

In reality, there is never really a debate about whether a behavior is good or

bad, there is simply a decision about which we opt for. The unbelieving person is
ruled by the flesh nature and is thus predisposed to make choices based on
personal preference. The believer has the advantage of direct input from the
indwelling Holy Spirit, who lobbies for unselfish and even sacrificial behavioral
choices.

Sin, in its most basic definition, is departure from God’s will. When a person
makes a behavioral decision that violates God’s law, he sins against God. But
when a believer chooses a behavior that violates the counsel of the indwelling
Holy Spirit, that choice also dismisses the personal assignment that God had
queued for him. This self-ish choice not only cancels the preordained mission, it
also interrupts the free flow of God’s spiritual direction.

Believers sometimes think that God only directs the path of believers, but that
is simply untrue. God acts through the lives of believers and non-believers alike.
God is the originator of all good ideas and direction. He alone inspires all of
mankind to accomplish great things. Without His inspiration, there would be no
innovation or advancement in the world at all! While He is not recognized for this
inspiration, He is the Author of all good, nonetheless!

James 1:17
Every good and perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father
of lights

Scripture warns the believer to be ever vigilant of thoughts that are not pure
and imaginations that violate the law of God. Satan remains the Prince of the
Power of the Air and thus controls the thought life of those not under the control
of the Holy Spirit. His intent is to occupy the mind and imagination of man. God
delivers inspiration while Satan elevates the human imagination.

Situational Awareness
1 Peter 5:8
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion,
walks about, seeking whom he may devour

It is essential that the believer keep his mind focused on the stream of godly
information coming from the Spirit. Scripture states clearly that good originates
from the Father of lights. Imaginations, on the other hand, originate from the god
of this world, Satan. We are to be focused on rejecting Satan’s input and bringing
every thought under the control of God’s Holy Spirit. The Bible never refers to
man’s imagination in a positive way.

2 Corinthians 10:5
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against
the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the
obedience of Christ

Our faith in His direction begins with simple acknowledgment that He guides
our lives, He gives us strength, discernment, and confidence to meet every
challenge. We can only fulfill our destiny by recognizing godly thoughts and
rejecting ungodly thoughts. God is intent on playing out His purpose in and for
you using preordained circumstances in your individual life. He reveals His
purpose to you one assignment at a time, as a series of lifelong quiet directives, or
spiritual "nudges."

Ephesians 2:10
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which
God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

This passage is neither a clarification of how the element of “good works” fit in
the life of the believer nor is it a general encouragement to do good things for
some noble or charitable cause. This verse is a clear declaration that God has
preordained very specific tasks or assignments for each believer to flesh out
during his/her lifetime. These nudges come in the form of thoughts or “bright
ideas” that we generally take personal credit for dreaming up. We do so
innocently because these “ideas” usually come to us in a voice that sounds a lot
like our own. Since God rarely speaks through burning bushes, angelic visits and
visions anymore, nudges are generally His communication of preference.
Scripture guides our behavior but God directs our daily lives through moment-
by-moment mental suggestions.

Think of these nudges as your spiritual GPS sending you behavioral

adjustments and ministry opportunities. Speaking inaudibly through your spirit
(in a voice that sounds a lot like yours), He guides you to deliver your talent
exactly where and when He wants to use it. Those thoughts that you assume are
your original thoughts... think again.

Just As I Thought
As a believer, you are being guided every moment of your life. The truth is,
God’s Spirit has been sending you nudge assignments from early childhood. No
kidding! If you think about it, you’ll realize that God has been delivering His
ministry moves through your spirit and into your thought life all along. Your job
has been, as it remains now, to act on His nudges and give Him the credit. It
really doesn’t get any more complicated than that.

But be aware that nudges may come at inconvenient times. Many times they
come at very inopportune times. I’ve been awakened in the middle of the night,
in the middle of conversations, during meetings, and while driving; situations
that make it easy to ignore, dismiss, or at least delay response. I was once nudged
to act on something while hanging hurricane shutters.

I have learned to give priority to these signals and do what is necessary to

carry out the assignments. I’ve learned to stop the car, put down the tool, get out
of bed, and even excuse myself from meetings and phone calls in order to address
a nudge. I now take this seriously. I want to be available for service at all times. I
figure that if God wanted me to act on a nudge later, He would have nudged me
later. God doesn’t believe in “to-do” lists. He lives in the now mode.

When you sense a thought that is positive, give God the credit and act on it
immediately, and without hesitation. If you see someone in need; meet that need,
and do it in stealth mode. God loves an anonymous giver! Every time you get
involved in someone’s need, God is immediately pleased and you’ll sense His
blessing both in this lifetime and even more important, you’ll be rewarded in the
lifetime to come. God ministers in the present and usually rewards later.

Satan almost always minimizes the importance of the nudges you are given,
making most nudges seem like a random human thoughts. You’ll usually notice
Satan’s logic presenting a case that the “idea” isn’t that important or should
probably be carried out later. But when you do act on a God-thought, God is
honored and He makes sure that you sense it immediately. I usually notice a
smile on my face right after a nudge is obeyed because I know where the nudge
came from. I am amazed (though I shouldn’t be) at God’s timing with His nudges.
His scheduling is amazing. While our relationship shouldn’t be based on feelings
and emotions, be assured that God will make you feel His presence when He is
pleased!

Our unique assignments are delivered to us at various times in our lives. Each
task is revealed through the Holy Spirit in the way of very personal thought
nudges. If (more correctly, when) we miss or dismiss a nudge, we are usually
given another nudge as a reminder. If we totally ignore repeated nudges, God will
find another person through whom He can accomplish that particular mission.

Nudges
Samuel received a personal nudge one night when he was sleeping in Eli’s
house. It took the wisdom of Eli to show Samuel how to listen and respond to
these messages.

1 Samuel 3:3-10
...while Samuel was lying down, that the Lord called Samuel. And he
answered, “Here I am!” So he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called
me.”

And he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” And he went and lay down.

Then the Lord called yet again, “Samuel!”

So Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.”
He answered, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” (Now Samuel did not yet
know the Lord, nor was the word of the Lord yet revealed to him.)

And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. So he arose and went to Eli,
and said, “Here I am, for you did call me.”

Then Eli perceived that the Lord had called the boy. Therefore Eli said to
Samuel, “Go, lie down; and it shall be, if He calls you, that you must say, ‘Speak,
Lord, for Your servant hears.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

Now the Lord came and stood and called as at other times, “Samuel!
Samuel!”

And Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant hears.”

If we repeatedly ignore a personal messages, God may simply pass that

assignment on to another available person. But when a personal nudge is
ignored, that opportunity is lost forever, and our human response record is
noted. We each have everyday opportunities to participate in God’s eternal plan
by paying attention to the cues He delivers.

Pushes
Phillip received a more urgent “push” to act as a personal witness for the
Lord.

Acts 8:26-31, 34-35

Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, “Arise and go toward the
south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is desert.
So he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great
authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her
treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship, was returning. And sitting in
his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet. Then the Spirit said to Philip,
“Go near and overtake this chariot.”

So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said,
“Do you understand what you are reading?” And he said, “How can I, unless
someone guides me?” And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him.

So the eunuch answered Philip and said, “I ask you, of whom does the
prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?” Then Philip opened his
mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him.

God’s motivational signals are not always gentle. Sometimes they are more
like pushes, forcing us into quite stressful circumstances. Often He puts us in
high pressure situations to test and strengthen our faith. We must realize that
difficult and challenging events are placed in our lives on purpose. Challenges are
not coincidences at all, they are orchestrated events intended to shape our
character. God assigns challenges (and occasional pushes) for the purpose of
moving us toward our full potential.

Shoves
In extreme circumstances, God employs downright shoves to get our
attention. When we act in a way that is totally contrary to His will, He lets us
know forcefully that we are misrepresenting Him and we are to change our
behavior immediately. Two individuals who fit this example in Scripture come to
mind: the prophet Jonah and Saul of Tarsus.

Jonah experienced a God-shove first hand. He was commissioned by God to

go preach to the heathen city of Nineveh. We all know the story of Jonah’s direct
refusal to accept God’s assignment and the harsh lesson he had to learn about
rebuffing God’s direction. Jonah’s deliberate and emphatic rebellion endangered
everyone on the ship he entered to run from God’s assignment. Only after Jonah
was thrown into the sea and swallowed by a giant fish did he understand the
gravity of refusing a direct order from God.

Jonah 1:1-3, 4-7

Now the word of Jehovah came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, Arise,
go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come
up before me. But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of
Jehovah; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish: so he
paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from
the presence of Jehovah.

Wherefore they cried unto Jehovah, and said, We beseech thee, O Jehovah,
we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us
innocent blood; for thou, O Jehovah, hast done as it pleased thee. So they took
up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging.
Then the men feared Jehovah exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice unto
Jehovah, and made vows.

And Jehovah prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in
the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Saul (before he was renamed Paul) experienced a “shove” on his way to

Damascus. Saul was what we call an “A-type” personality; one who had no
trouble taking a position and making his position forcefully known. Saul was not
only a Roman citizen, he was a credentialed Jewish zealot who believed that his
mission in life was to halt the spread of Christianity and persecute Christian
believers. He was known to hold the garments of those who stoned these
believers. God had to knock Saul to the ground and temporarily blind him to get
his attention.

Acts 9:1-6
Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the
Lord, went to the high priest and asked letters from him to the synagogues of

Herb Paynter

Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or
women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around

him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him,
“Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” And he said, “Who are You, Lord?”
Then the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to
kick against the goads.”

So he, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do You want me to do?”
Then the Lord said to him, “Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what
you must do.”

Herb Paynter

Motivational Choreography
God sends messages to all men, believers and unbelievers alike to accomplish
His will. Saul certainly knew who God was, and he viewed himself as a very
righteous and obedient servant of His even before he believed Jesus Christ was
the Messiah. In the very city that Saul traveled to persecute believers, Ananias
received a direct push from God to go minister to Saul, who had just been shoved
to the ground an temporarily blinded.

Acts 9:10-12
Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and to him
the Lord said in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.”

So the Lord said to him, “Arise and go to the street called Straight, and
inquire at the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold, he is
praying. And in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in and
putting his hand on him, so that he might receive his sight.”

In this one scenario, we see God shoving one person and pushing another to
accomplish his will. God motivates chosen human beings to orchestrate His will.
God does predestine humans to carry out specific missions. God’s plan always
entails man’s participation.

Staying Tuned to the God Channel

God designed human beings with a very special broadcast signal receiver
called man’s spirit. We know that man was created as body, soul, and spirit, but
many people don’t really understand the difference between man’s soul and his
spirit; indeed, many believe the words are somewhat synonymous. While they
both describe the non-physical part of us, they are far from the same thing.

The human spirit is usually thought of as an emotional or motivation or

mannerism trait… as “he has a mean/kind spirit” thing. Unfortunately, this is far
from the truth. The human spirit is the part of man that died in the Garden of
Eden, and the part that is “born again” upon belief in Jesus Christ.

I’ve developed an entire study on the confusion that Satan has sown in an
attempt to homogenize these terms. Way too much misinformation about the
“saving of the soul” exists within Christendom and great harm has been done
because of this lack of distinction. Suffice to say that references in Scripture to the
soul must be clearly understood and distinguished from man’s spirit.

The human spirit gets jump-started the moment we accept Christ as Savior
and is once again able to literally hear God’s will. Until the new birth happens, we
are spiritually deaf.

In very broad terms, the soul is the seat of man’s emotions, desires, behavior,
and will, while the spirit is actually our spiritual signal receiver. It is how God
speaks to us individually. The Bible gives us clear direction and instruction about
how we are to conduct ourselves in general, but when God has something He
specifically wants an individual to do, He uses His Holy Spirit to speak to us
through what I call “the God Channel.”

The God Channel is a spiritual message receiver that must be distinguished

from other noise and programming that comes through our minds from the god
of this world. Setting our minds on the Lord or delighting in the Lord is the
method we use to literally “hear” God’s will. We determine to tune our attention
to the pure content of the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

While all humans possess a spirit, that spirit is dead to the God Channel and
unregenerate man cannot even tune that frequency in. What this means is that
unregenerate man (those who have never received Christ as Savior) can only hear
uninspired or ungodly signals. These signals are not necessarily bad or immoral,
they are simply soulish; and unable to hear spiritual truth. Our God Channel is
our spiritual GPS receiver that gives us clear life direction and information.

God orchestrates and delivers elements of His will to believers and non-
believers alike, though His assignments and rewards for obedient believers
deliver a powerful and eternal consequence. But disobedience by a believer
presents a different kind of reward.

Herb Paynter
Designing Your Dream House 27

When believers act in a manner that is offensive to the Lord, the Holy Spirit
sends a searing message burning through the God Channel, that our selfish
behavior is not acceptable and will not be tolerated. When we receive this
spiritual jolt, we must take it seriously and our “rebellion” must cease
immediately. As believers, repentance; a change in our attitude and direction, is
the expected response. God’s grace is always present but so is His intolerance for
sin.

When we de-tune our spirit receiver away from the God Channel, the Holy
Spirit delivers a less than comforting nudge to our human spirit. We usually
think of this nudge as a guilty conscience. This corrective nudge will continue to
plague our minds until we either respond correctly or force the thought out of our
minds. Disrespect for God’s correction is never a good idea.

Sometimes what we interpret as a guilty conscience is actually the grieving of

the Holy Spirit as it passes through our human spirit, pleading Its case for quick
repentance. We feel this emotional discomfort in our souls, a nagging emotional
funk that cannot be dismissed. Sin must be dealt with or there is no peace. The
next time you find yourself in the emotional lowlands, ask the Lord to reveal any
possible offense. God’s plan never gets shut down because of our refusal to
cooperate. His persistence will eventually convict us. God doesn’t give up on His
kids, no matter how long it takes.

As long as a believer keeps his spiritual receiver tuned-in and he heeds God’s
nudges and directions, the God-channel stays open and directional signals
remain strong and distinct. But when the channel is de-tuned by sin or
intentionally tuned to the more popular Self-Indulgence channel, that clear and
distinct God-message fades and becomes increasingly more difficult to hear.
There is no pleasure in losing one’s bearings. Keep the channel clear of
interference.

Seeking God’s Will vs. Accepting Assignments

A common expression among believers is “I’m seeking the Lord’s will” gets
said when significant decisions have to be made into our lives. We all do it, and
we all mean it. It’s part of our Christian culture.

But if we ask for God’s counsel only when we are faced with life’s big
challenges, we are missing the reality of His involvement and guidance in our
everyday lives. Actually, this is treating God like an attorney, calling on Him only
when we are in trouble.

The truth is, God makes His will known to every believer many times every
day. Unfortunately, we stay so busy that our busyness sometimes drowns out His
business. When this happens, we lose the realization that God is perpetually
streaming His wisdom and blessing into our lives. I use the term nudge to
describe this communication since God rarely speaks through lightning bolts,
thunder claps, or burning bushes anymore. His voice is usually sweet, gentle and
quiet.

He directs our everyday lives with the same gentle nudges used by
experienced horseback riders communicating with their horses. Gentle
movements of the reins and nudges made with their knees are all that is
necessary for the rider to convey their will to the horse. Harsh moves are only
necessary when the horse resists or ignores the nudge-level directives of the rider.

To those who would object to the concept of the Spirit controlling believers
like horsemen control horses, I humbly suggest that this is not only a reasonable
example, but a proper one. Owners and trainers love and care for their horses
and the horses respond to that love. Believers pray for guidance, expect
protection and provision, and respond to gentle love. Think about it.

Missed Assignments and Course Corrections

No matter how much we try to live honorable and faithful lives, we still have
to deal with our sinful nature. We will struggle with temptations and poor
behavior throughout our lives. It’s just the reality of human life on this Earth. The
only recovery process designed by God to address sin and restore fellowship with
Him is confession and repentance (redirection). No human attempts to reform or
turn over a new leaf will completely eliminate Satan’s nudge to sin in the
believer’s life. But once a confession of sin is made to God, His recovery process is
immediate, complete, and guaranteed.

1 John 1:8-9
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in
us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to
cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

However, if this practice of tuning out the Holy Spirit and yielding to the flesh
becomes a habit, our clear God-channel directional signal will begin to fade and
our moral compass will lose its bearing. Confession and repentance (believers’
course correction) is the only method designed to get a believer back on track, in
the race, and in pursuit of the prize.

Philippians 3:12-14
Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on,
that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.
Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do,
forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things
which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God
in Christ Jesus.

Last Thought: Be Prepared

This trite phrase sums up the challenge of preparing for life in our next house,
at our next location, and in truth- it is this simple. We must start today tuning
into and listening to The God Channel. Our spiritual receiver, the Spirit member
of our Body-Soul-Spirit being, must learn to hear with spiritual ears. There is no
volume setting on this receiver, just a tuning dial.

Starting today, we must reckon that every day, God is delivering His
predestined agenda to our Spirit via His Holy Spirit. Listen closely and act on it
quickly. While the wold considers a goldbrick to be a bad thing, in spiritual terms,
it is the construction material recommended by the Master builder. I would
suggest that we all try to construct our eternal homes with precious and durable
materials rather than wood.

Your earthly house will soon be demolished. It was never built to last.

2 Corinthians 5:1-6
For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a
building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in
this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting
it on we may not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan,
being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further
clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. He who has
prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a
guarantee.

So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in

the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight.

What your new dwelling will look like is totally up to you. You will live forever,
but what position you will enjoy in Christ’s Kingdom is being designed every day
for the rest of your life. Build well.
