THE INTERVIEW
That’s possible. But let me tell you another story, because I often tell stories like a
Chinese wise man. My American publisher said while she loved my book, she did n’t
expect to sell more than 3,000 copies in a country where nobody has seen a cathedral
or studies Latin. So I was given an advance for 3,000 copies, but in the end it sold two or
three million in the U.S.
A lot of books have been written about the medieval past for before mine. I think the
success of the book is a mystery. Nobody can predict it. I think if I had written ‘The
Name of the Rose’ ten year earlier or ten years later, it wouldn’t have been the same.
Why it worked at that time is a mystery.

Questions :

(a) What does the American publisher say to Umberto Eco ?

(b) Who does “I” refer to?

(c) How many copies of that book were sold ?

(d) What is the name of the book?

(e) What does Umberto Eco say about the success of the book?

(f) What is a mystery according to Umberto Eco ?

Answers :
(a) American publisher says that in a country where nobody has seen a cathedral or
studies Latin, sales will not exceed 3,000 copies of the book.

(b) Umberto Eco

(c) Two or three million copies of that book were sold.

(d) The name of Rose

(e) Umberto Eco says that the success of the book is a mystery.

(f) According to Umberto Eco, ‘why it worked at that time is a mystery’. The sale and
success of the book was a mystery.

Short Answer
What are the views of writers like V.S. Naipaul and Lewis Carroll in interviews?

Celebrities like V.S. Naipaul, Rudyard Kipling, Lewis Carroll and H.G. Wells have
expressed their strong disdain for interviews. They consider interviews immoral -‘an
assault’ because they feel interviews leave a rather disparaging effect on their
personalities and are an encroachment on their privacy.

How does Umberto Eco explain his capacity of doing so much work? What
are ‘interstices’ and how does Eco use them?

Umberto tells the secret of his working style. People have a lot of empty
spaces in their lives. He calls them ‘interstices’ or ‘intervals’. He utilises and
makes use of them. This is the secret of his success. He tells his interviewer
that while he was waiting for his elevator to come up, he had already written
an article.
LONG ANSWER
Several celebrities despise being interviewed. Is this justified? Why? Why not?

There are several celebrities mentioned in this chapter like Rudyard Kipling, V.S. Naipaul,
H.G. Wells, Saul Bellow and etc. who dislike interviews very strongly. They never became
ready to be interviewed. Most of them considered interviews as an unwarranted
intrusion into their lives. They did not want to reveal the secrets of their personal lives.

Even an interview is considered as an immoral activity, as a crime or sometimes as an

assault. They feel that the interviewers waste their precious time which can be used by
them for more creativity. On the other hand, the common mass takes interviews very
positively as they come to know about the inner and hidden things of their ideals. But
interviews have their drawbacks also.

Celebrities feel shy and disappointed when they are asked for interviews but they forget
that they become famous and wealthy through the successful interviews. General mass
become their fan and devotee by knowing more and more about their ideals. Celebrities
are even worshipped. In this regard, it can be said that an interview cannot be termed as
an immoral activity.

GOING PLACES

“Damn that Geoff, this was a Geoff thing not a Jansie thing.” Why did Sophie say so?
Sophie had cooked up the story of her meeting with Danny Casey to impress Geoff who
was a great fan of the football prodigy. She knew this news would be of great interest to
her brother. She had also thought her brother would keep her secret. She did not want
Jansie, who was ‘nosey’, to know about this. So when Geoff told Jansie, Sophie cursed
him because she knew Jansie would spread her story in the entire neighbourhood.

How did Sophie’s father react when Geoff told him about her meeting with Danny
Casey?
When Geoff told their father about Sophie’s meeting with Danny Casey he did not believe
it and suspected it was one of Sophie’s wild stories. He was filled with disdain and did
not want to encourage her in any way. So he warned her to keep herself out of any kind
of trouble.

Did Geoff keep up his promise? How do you know?

No, Geoff did not keep his promise. He told Frank about Sophie’s meeting with Danny
Casey though he had promised her he would not disclose it. Even Jansie came to know
about it. Sophie was happy to know that Geoff had at least not revealed the date of her
meeting with Casey.

LONG ANSWER

Jansie is just as old as Sophie but she is very different from her. Bring out the contrast
between the two friends citing relevant instances from the story, “Going Places”.

Sophie and Jansie were classmates as well as friends. They both belonged to lower
middle- class families. But that is where their similarity ends. There is a striking contrast
between their characters. Sophie is a day-dreamer and Jansie is practical. Sophie lives
in a world of dreams and does not want to come out of this fairyland. She is an
incurable escapist and dreams of having a boutique, becoming an actress or a fashion
designer. Jansie, on the other hand, is very grounded. Jansie has her feet firmly planted
on the ground and knows they are both ‘earmarked for the biscuit factory’. She knows
big things require big money and experience which they lack desperately. She advises
Sophie to be sensible and not entertain wild dreams. Sophie and Jansie temperaments
differ greatly. While Sophie shares her dreams only with one person, her brother Geoff,
Jansie on the other hand is nosey. She takes an interest in learning new things about
others and can spread stories in the whole neighbourhood.
