IN THE NAME OF SERVICE

Among the listed community services, two activities gave me a remarkable and
memorable experience. These are, joining a clean-up drive in our barangay, and
planting trees together with other youth in our community. Extending and volunteering to
help the community has been requisite to engender enhancement and improvement in
such specific areas that need to be addressed in a community.

Opting to join community services especially if the said activity deals with nature,
made my heart flutter and made me want to enthusiastically join to maintain the
splendor beauty of nature. As the former President of the Youth for Environment in
School's Organization (YES-O) in my alma mater, Plaridel National High School, we
have the mission to lead the student body to maintain cleanliness, orderliness, and
attain a greener environment. Nevertheless, our mission does not limit to the school
premises, but we adhere to having the vision to spread awareness to the community.
Hence, we cooperate with the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) and the Barangay Officials
of Plaridel. Thus, we work with optimism hand in hand.

Consequently, the lesson and value I learned in joining a clean-up drive in our
barangay and planting trees in the community were, with our little ways of taking action,
we make a big leap towards attaining a cleaner environment. We upheld the value of
being a nature enthusiast who cares for the present setting of the community and also
for the future life of the society. Additionally, we could contribute to the protection of the
environment, hence attaining comfortable and sustainable living. Through bringing out
the sense of volunteerism and self-empowerment, these services have become an
avenue to build a stronger connection with others that increases the essence of
camaraderie. Thus, making a positive impact on the environment that helps address the
problems of the community.

I. Assessment of Community Need: Survey
The Community Need
Problem Statement:

The Purok 4 of Barangay Plaridel is often


affected by severe floods. It has been evident
over the years which results to increased cases
of dengue, damage to property, sanitation
issues, and destruction to environment. A lack of
drainage system in Barangay Plaridel and
improper garbage disposal leads to dire flooding
during heavy rains because of drainage
clogging.

II. After the implementation of this community


Project Goals program or project, the following objectives
are expected to achieve:

1. construct a proper garbage disposal signage


2. spread awareness on proper garbage
disposal
3. organize a clean-up drive program.

III. The direct beneficiaries are the residents of


Target Beneficiaries Barangay Plaridel, specifically the residents
residing in Purok 4, that are heavily affected by
floods.

V. Community Development Project Title:


Outreach Program Method
" A CALL TOWARDS A PROPER GARBAGE
DISPOSAL TO AMELIORATE THE ADVERSE
IMPACTS OF FLOODING"

Project Description:

The project proposal will be submitted to the SK


Chairman of Barangay Plaridel where activities
are enumerated such as:
1. Construction of proper garbage disposal
signage.
2. Conduct a scheduled symposium on
Proper Garbage Disposal Awareness with
a minimum number of residents per
schedule to be conducted by the
Sangguniang Kabataan officials.
3. Clean-up Drive Campaign in Saturday
and Sunday- to be participated by the
residents of Barangay Plaridel, especially
the youth of the said Barangay.

Promotion/Campaign Materials

The activities will be posted through various


social media platforms, announcements through
patrol and during mass, posters, and
infographics. Attendance of the attendees will be
checked by the Sangguniang Kabataan officials.

Findings and Suggestions for Improvement:

The project will be monitored monthly by the


Sangguniang Kabataan Officials and quarterly
by the Barangay Officials handling Disaster
Management, and Environment and Natural
Resources concern. It is anticipated and
expected that the community will be able to
maintain the cleanliness, and the proper
knowledge and awareness on proper garbage
disposal beyond the end of the project. Hence,
diminishing the rate of residents who get ill from
dengue due to poor sanitation and improve and
maintain the waste management of every
household to attain a cleaner environment.
Thus, prevents clogging of wastes in the
drainage system in Barangay Plaridel.

Processing Questions:

1. I believe that the Me in My Community symbolizes the unique characteristics and


values we have in ourselves which can be an immense help in terms of community
development. We have the capacity, capability, verve, and specific skills which need to
be harnessed and be useful to the community. Through helping to attain community
development programs and projects, we could live harmoniously with each other and
achieve a good rapport. Hence, make use of the knowledge, values, and skills we have
in ourselves to foster community development and boost volunteerism and self-
empowerment.

2. The discombobulating current crisis has been a driving force for us to impede our
sense of engaging in community efforts. Due to the fact of we were restricted and our
actions have been limited, hence we are stuck in our respective residences. Thus, to
ameliorate the problems faced in our community amidst this pandemic, the way must
start within ourselves. We must engage enthusiastically in a community development
project administered by the local officials and the barangay officials because the change
precisely starts with our will to take action. We must show interest in keeping in touch
through activities, actions, and projects for this could be a good opportunity to pick up
and enhance new skills. Consequently, we could double our efforts and impacts if we
collaborate using innovative and digital platforms. Above all, the significance of
engaging oneself in a community development project is that we can boost our sense of
self-satisfaction, social, responsibility and enhance our knowledge.

What I Have Learned

1. Why is volunteerism and self-empowerment important in organizing school-


community development projects?

In my perspective, volunteerism, and self-empowerment are important in


organizing school-community development projects because these two commendable
characteristics are intertwined with each other which likely produce a positive impact on
the community and make any programs and projects a success. The utmost goal of a
community development project is to help others and deal with the problems and needs
of the community. However, before we can help and volunteer, we need first to
empower ourselves by understanding our strengths and weaknesses and making
positive choices for our betterment. Hence, we'll be able to maximize our strengths to do
something for our growth. Learning about oneself is a key component to harnessing the
essence of volunteerism and self-empowerment which leads to attaining a significant
goal. Therefore, deeming up with our values to substantially impact our society through
community development projects and programs.

2. How can you influence other students to participate in school community


development projects?

I can influence other students to participate in school community development


projects by upholding the value of stewardship and camaraderie for the betterment and
development of the school community. The proper decorum must begin within
ourselves. Hence, it's essential to maximize our strengths and overcome our
weaknesses to be able to empower ourselves which is requisite to magnanimously
influence other students. Moreover, I must foster my ability to appropriately lead the
activity or program to be commended by the people that surround me, hence becoming
a good example to them. Consequently, through being benevolent and compassionate
to the needs of the school community, I'll be able to engender harmony and a good
rapport that positively impacts the community we live in. Therefore, through these, I'll be
able to immensely influence other students to be active in participating in community
development.

Additional Activities

1. We are now on the process for the promotion and campaign materials needed to
invite other students in the campus to join and support our school community
development project plan especially during this time of pandemic.
2. The current issues and problems that confront the world by web searching, watching
videos, and reading magazines or newspapers are: Covid-19 pandemic, Poverty,
Religious Conflict & War, Political Polarization, Government Accountability, Education,
Food and Water, Health in Developing Nations, Credit Access, Discrimination, and
Physical fitness.
