Using potassium permanganate, we will explore the process of diffusion, the movement of particles from areas of higher
concentration to areas of lower concentration. Follow and complete the steps below.

1. Observe the potassium permanganate crystals and describe them in English.

It dark brown, small and it has crystals in side like a clay.

2. Place 3 small spoonfuls of potassium permanganate into 40 cm of water. DO NOT MIX the solution. Watch the
changes in the solution and take a picture of it at 1, 5, and 10 minutes after dropping the crystals in. Insert the
pictures in the spaces below.

3. How did the solution change from the beginning of the experiment to the end? Use your pictures from #2 to
answer this question.
The potassium permanganate is higher concentration.

4. What might happen to the solution if we put more potassium permanganate crystals into it?
It might be higher concentration.

Osmosis
Osmosis describes the movement of water across a semipermeable membrane (like the cell membrane) from areas of
lower solute concentration to areas of higher solute concentration. Solutes are the things that are dissolved in the water.
In this portion of the lab, we will use a cellophane bag to be our semipermeable membrane and sugar to be our solute.
We will observe what happens to the volume of a bag of sugar water after it is placed in pure water. Follow and
complete the steps below.

5. What was the solute in the diffusion lab?

Sugar

6. Wash the cellophane with distilled water and place it in a beaker; then pour 30 mL of sugar solution into the bag.
Tie the bag up as shown by the teacher to the glass rod. Place the bag into a large beaker of 50 mL of distilled
water and watch the bag change over time. Take pictures of the bag at the beginning and end of the experiment
and insert them below.

7. How did the bag change from the beginning to the end of the experiment?

The bag is not change but the concentration of the sugar in the bag is change.

8. In which direction does the water move in this activity? Draw a picture to help you explain. Use arrows to show
the movement of water.
In to the bag and up to the straw.

9. What do you think would happen if the bag was placed in a beaker of 20% sugar solution (same concentration)?
40% sugar solution (higher concentration)?
-20percent The water in straw is not change because water in and out is same.

-40percent The water in straw is fall down because water in the beaker is more

than in side cellophane.
