CHAPTER 2: ACTIVITIES

2.1 INTRODUCTION

This chapter will describe the activities that I carried on during my industrial training
that I carried on at Ickens Electricals Uganda. The activities started from inauguration
until real field work both at company and other external sites

2.2 Inauguration
This is the process of providing a form of orientation to an individual or organization. Site
induction was the first activity that happened on arrival to the site
The site safety officer cautioned me on wearing safety gear while on the premises and particular
tools when doing specific tasks e.g., safety helmets reflectors, overall, safety boots, safety glasses
and gloves. He also ensured that he checked all the personal necessary requirements that I would
need we with me and there by consenting my placement
I had close to the whole of my first week being taught theoretically on what I would do while at
the field, who am expected to behave, the safety measures that I should take while at site, the
first aid administration (First aid Training Manual, 2020) in case of accidents and also the chain
of command to be followed was
I was also taught how to read and interpret electrical drawings as they were vital during the
installation process (Bird, 2016)
2.1.1. Lessons gained from the inauguration
 Reading and interpretation of site maps
 First aid administration for accidents at site
 Importance of wearing safety and protective gears while at the site

2.3 LIGHTS & SOCKETS INSTALLATION AND REPLACEMENT

Light installation is a basic wiring practice of being able to put into place lights and control
switches for them whereas replacement is removal of fault lights, switches or and light lines so
as to ensure that the former lighting lines can again light. On several occasions, this was done
and some of the sites we did this works were in Buloba and Seeta

5
4.0 Installation of lights

Light installation is a process of putting lights in the place that they had not been previously. To
do the light installations, the following steps were followed

 Read and interpret the wiring map

 Turn off the circuit that’s going to be installed (unplug or turn of circuit breaker).
 Locate termination position, stripe wires from one end that is close to where power will be
entering from.
 Drill holes where the lights fixture is to be mounted.
 Connect all terminals in the light’s fixtures, using wire nuts to cover exposed end of any
wires.
 Mount the fixture up on the ceiling and connect the wires of the power supply.
 Then switch and test if the circuit is okay.

4.1 Socket installation Labelling and maintenance

This was done at residential house in Buloba. I was able to install socket labeling as part of the
activities. Both socket installation and replacement were done

Steps taken during installation

 Make a work plan and identify materials to be used.
 Identify the nearest power source that can supply the socket.
 Run a cable trunking on which sockets are going to sit and cables are going to run in. this
involves drilling and use of wall plugs and screws to hold the trunking firm.
 Cable cables through the trunking from the power source to their destination.
 Terminate sockets and the screw them on the mould boxes that are screwed firm onto the
trunking.
 Test the socket to check if they have received power and if there is no exchange of cables
with different polarities that might cause a short circuit or damage of the equipment that
might be plugged in.

6
Steps taken in socket labelling
Labeling of sockets is the most useful thing one must do after their installation in the distribution
board.it enables easy identification of the socket and isolator incases of short circuits and power
issues.

 Identifying which sockets are which for which isolator

 After that is known, they are given different labels according to the label one has given the
isolators.
 Now one can easily identify the sockets isolators in the distribution board during Socket
labeling at E&P total.

4.2 Replacement and maintenance procedures

Just as the word states, light replacement and maintenance is the process of replacing spoilt
lights. The spoilt lights can be as a result of blown bulbs, lamp holders, switches or even wires
that may be cut of resulting into an open circuit. Some of the maintained lights may even be
working though the state in which they are in may not be right and thus require maintenance

 Study the situation the lights are in.

 Trouble shoot the parts and turn off the circuit breakers.
 Disassemble the circuit and remove the faulty components.
 Diagnose and test the new components to be sure if they are also okay.
 Clean the components and then assemble them in the circuit.
 Then test and check whether the circuit and components are conducting.

Skills and lessons gained

 Light installations

 Light repair and maintenance

 Socket installation

 Use of a driller

 Socket labeling

7
 Reading of maps

4.3 Domestic installations

This is the installation of power to be used at home and in Uganda it is always 240 v 50 Hz AC
mains. During my industrial training I had an opportunity to carryout out domestic installation
and I was able to do activities such as slab work, earthing and domestic wiring. Will shortly
write about all the activities in domestic installations here

2.3.1 Earthing
This the grounding of the conductive parts of an installation to the earth to prevent electric shock
due to earth leakage current. It also protects equipment and appliances that are being used at
home
During my industrial training I practiced 2 types of earthing that is to say
Equipment earthling: This is the grounding of the steel frames,,. Cable trays used in the
overall construction of the building. This type of earthing is one where a neutral/return cable
from the AC mains is put to the ground using earthing rods that re sunk deep within the dug earth
pits.
Here, earth pits were dug at a depth of 150cm, measured 100cm by 80cm and 180cm from the
structure to the earth pit.
They were then filled by a 50 mm2 copper wire was lagged to the structural earthing lead
conductor to increase its length to the earth pit using a lagging tool. A vertical earth electrode
was connected to the earth lead conductor and placed into the pit. Charcoal dust, salt and water
were poured into the pit.
2.3.2 Slab work
This is the electrical work carried out on the slab before concrete casting was done.
Activities done during slab work were
 Electrical drawing reading and interpretation
 Pipe work
 Binding conduits
 Centering and marking of lights
 Floor boxes

8
 Piping of stair case lights
At this stage I was reminded about the theoretical class of inauguration on the importance of
electrical drawings and interpretations. This guided me a lot in slab work
Upon interpretation of the drawing I was then meant to apply this at site so as not to differ with
the set plan. My agency supervisor played a key role of guidance here
This involved centering of the lights following by marking of the spots using red oxide. This red
oxide paint later guided when it comes to fixing of circulars boxes for lights and boxes for the
floor boxes.
Pipe work
Pipe work was done at slab and also during general installations. Pipe work is the running of
PVC conduits (Heavy gauge duty) of various sizes from the source to accessories like switches,
lights, power sockets and data sockets. Several conduit sizes are used for different purposes
during installations. This is so that the different cable sizes also fit in them
The sizes include; 25mm2 for light and power circuits, 32mm2 for data cables,50mm2 for main
supply cable.
During pipe work I also did bending of different sizes of conduits into different angles
accordingly e.g. offset, right angles etc.
To join the pipes together, couplers are used together with the use of PVC glue whereas offsets
were used as dropping to circular box entries.
We also used binding wire is used to firmly hold the conduit in position. Papers were used to
block the penning of pipes and circular boxes to avoid filling of the pipes by concrete.
Wiring
During wiring, I happened to learn so many things such as wiring of 2 way switches, one way
and also wiring the consumer unit among other things.
Skills and lessons gained

 Light installations

 Light repair and maintenance

 Socket installation

 Use of a driller
9
 Socket labeling

 Reading of maps

 Earthing

 Slab work

 Consumer unit and junction box wiring

Repairing and servicing of the microwave oven

Microwave ovens uses electromagnetic waves of high frequencies to heat and warm foods. So, of
the ovens are made in such away that are even able to cook foods using heating coils
During my industrial training I was chanced to have a opportunity to service and repair a
microwave oven
Steps for servicing a microwave oven
 Unplug power and remove moving parts
 Open the Back Cover
 Check the Fuse First.
 Inspect door switches
 See inside of the switch
 Buy a Replacement Part
 Install The New Switch.

 Tapping
Advantages of drilling machines
 Requires less energy
 High precision and accuracy is maintained when using it
 It is easy to operate
 The maintenance is low
DISADVANTAGES OF A DRILLING MACHINE
 It makes rough holes during the drilling operation therefore a medium surface finish can be
expected butt not high surface finish.
 if there is an improper damping between the drill and work piece there will be a probability of
breaking the drill bit.

16
Chapter 3: Evaluation
3.1 Achievements, skills and experiences

During the industrial training I have had the following achievements, skills and experiences

 I interacted with the work environment and got to know what is required from me as a
worker
 I learnt that at all times as an engineer in the field putting on protective gears are so essential
in prevention of high risks in case of accidents
 I have built confidence in myself as I was able to apply classroom knowledge in
troubleshooting and repairing some of the systems at the site
 I essentially gained much knowledge on CCTV camera installation and why it is so necessary
to do it
 I learnt how to install lights and sockets
 I learnt to do earthing for a domestic installation
 I learnt to do construct a DOL box
 I was able to understand the work ethics
 Learnt how to write work related reports as this were asked from me for every activity by the
agency supervisor
 Gained knowledge on the importance of team work and specialization when it the field this
yields to quick and quality work
 Able to meet new friends that gave me career guidance on the paths to take to develop my
career further

On the other hand I faced a few challenges while carrying on my industrial training

 Using of some tools was a challenge

 Travelling long distances like to Masindi was a challenge to me because of the long distance
travels
 Walking long distances to the head offices before I would be facilitated with transport to the
field

17
 Limited time as I was not able to interface with all the systems since the internship time was
short
3.2 Recommendations
 I would therefore carry on the following recommendations to the institute for consideration
 Internship period should be carried twice to increase the period in the field so as to learn
more
 Find new equipment in the laboratories and seriously take on Practicals to avoid
unfamiliarity of some tools while in the field
 Should enforce policies for protective wear for all school laboratory practices so as even
when one moved to the field for industrial training is comfortable with putting on the
protective wear
3.3 Conclusion

In summary the industrial training that I carried from Ickens Electricals Uganda has been of great
value to me and I was exposed to quite a good number of real-life scenarios, able to troubleshoot
and fix some of the systems and this has made me gain confidence in myself

The working period spent at Ickens Electricals is a unique experience for me.it is an eye opener
to how real-world tasks are dealt with and exposure to field work is a welcoming practice. Being
in different fields has made me learn different site handling and management skills, hard and soft
skills that can’t be learnt in lecture rooms.

In practical training, have gained exposure to systematic work coordination in a conducive

environment coupled with friendly staff that are always there to help.
