My Connection to Engineering

Good day, I am Carlo Rico V. Amurao, but I prefer you call me “Kaloy”. I’m a
third-year student in New Era University currently taking up BS Civil Engineering
course. I used to live in a small town, Calintaan, located in the province of Occidental
Mindoro before transferring here in Mandaluyong City to pursue my studies. Why did I
choose Civil Engineering, you might ask? Well, the answer is simple. I would like to
continue the “frustrated” dream of my mother; it is to pass the board exam. Also, I came
from a province that seems to need development, it is also my dream to provide
services to help our province emerge to modernization as it might help open doors to
keep up our economy through faster trades and other opportunities. But before I do so, I
must have to study first.

Before starting this semester, my sister decided to bring us to Singapore as a

reward for my other sister’s accomplishment. We stayed in Singapore for almost 3
weeks, when I was there, I learned how different Singapore is compared to the
Philippines. For example, I noticed how advance their technology is, they prioritize the
comfort of their citizens as well as tourists through smart planning and execution of
railways and transportation. What’s even more amazing are their infrastructures that not
only are pleasing in the eyes but convenient as well. Because of this it encourages me
to improve how I study.

Before, I used to procrastinate a lot, but now I learned that it is important to have
time management, so I will not miss any activities while taking care of myself. Also, I try
to be organized so that I know what projects I need to accomplish first. Doing so I would
need a mentor that would help me study, I expect to learn how Engineers plan
roadways and railways that would improve our transportation. I also would like to learn
how they will execute the plan accordingly.
