Cinema
Ishmael Bernal’s “Broken Marriage” discovers the facts that this is a Personal Function
of art and Social functions of art because the artist wants to express herself/himself or
she/he wants to communicate an idea to the audience in any romantic relationship. This
film is revolutionary in a sense that it tackles important family issues and gradually
enlightens its audience with the pros and cons of family-making.

MUSIC
Cultures around the world rarely use music for abstract listening. Almost always, music
serves some social function. For instance, there may be songs you sing when you wake
up and other songs when it is time to go to bed (these we call "lullabies"). You might
sing certain songs before meals, other songs while you are working in the field, yet other
songs when preparing a meal. You might sing certain songs while you are waiting for
something and others while you are walking or marching. Certain songs may be used to
get in a spiritual mood, others to get in a mood for fighting, others to celebrate a
marriage, birth, or birthday, and yet others to mourn the passing of a loved one. In
other words, music is not just there being beautiful, it is doing something. It is
performing a social function.
In the song of Angeline Quito which is “Patuloy ang pangarap” also defined as Personal
Functions of Art because in this line
“Unti-unting mararating
Tagumpay ko'y makikita
Patuloy ang pangarap
Patuloy ang pangarap”
It expresses the self-expression, entertainment and therapeutic value. The Value of the
song speak highly on the dreams of someone that needs to come true.
Painting
The Potato Eaters Painted by Van Gogh was identify as Personal Function of arts
because he saw that the Potato Eaters as a showpiece, for which he deliberately chose a
difficult composition to prove he was on his way to becoming a good figure painter. The
painting had to depict the harsh reality of country life, so he gave the peasants coarse
faces and bony, working hands. He wanted to show in this way that they ‘have tilled the
earth themselves with these hands they are putting in the dish ... that they have thus
honestly earned their food’. The function is highly subjective.

2. Match the function of art with its philosophical perspectives. (10pts.)
● Personal functions of arts are matches the philosophical perspectives of art
which is Art as a Communication of Emotion and Art as a Representation it is
highly subjective to a personal feelings and the message or arts that wants to
communicate to the audience while Social functions of art are Art as an Imitation
and Art as a Disinterested Judgement it highly gives a match to social interest
which is a better art. Physical Functions of Art is Art as a Representation it is a
highly literary representation of what things might be as Aristotle said and it is
can be universal despite its subjectivity which is Art as a Disinterested
Judgement.
