Hryhoriy Kochur

as a translator

Kochur’s translations span 26 centuries
(from Greek antiquity to the 20th
century), three continents (Europe,
America and Asia) and almost 30
literatures. He was sent to Soviet labor
camps but turned his experience there
into a period of creative activity.
Contrary to the expectations of his Soviet
persecutors, he built a protective barrier
and worked for the future. He believed
that one day a time of freedom would
come and with it new generations that
would respect their language and
culture.

BYRON`S POEM
AND
TRANSLATION
BY KOCHUR

Sun of the sleepless! Melancholy star! Безсонних сонце, зірко жалібнá!

Thy tearful beam glows tremulously far, Твій слізний пломінь криє далина,
That show`st the darkness thou canst not dispel, Безсилий пітьму він перемогти.
How like art thou to joy remembered well! Як на минуле щастя схожа ти!

So gleams the past, the light of other days, Отак нам світить відблиск інших днів,
Which shines, but warms not with its powerless Але не гріє, хоч би як виднів.

A night-beam Sorrow watcheth to behold, Хоч видна – та здаля, ясна – та без
Distinct, but distant – clear – but, oh how cold! тепла
 THE FIRST STROPHE
IN THE FIRST LINE KOCHUR REPLACES
THE ADJECTIVE "MELANCHOLY" WITH
"ЖАЛІБНА" WHICH EXPRESSES
SADNESS, GRIEF, SORROW.
ALSO HERE YOU CAN SEE THE
REPLACEMENT OF PARTS OF SPEECH:
" CANST NOT DISPEL" INTO
"БЕЗСИЛИЙ ВІН ПЕРЕМОГТИ"
 THE SECOND STROPHE
Kochur translated the first two lines
more laconic and shorter, avoided some
words and phrases, such as " the past",
"powerless rays;"
he also used the slightly outdated word
"минувшина"
When transmitting, for example, epithets, Hryhoriy Kochur
tries to preserve the semantics: A night –beam Sorrow
watcheth to behold – Так в ніч сумну минувшина зійшла,
structure: Thy tearful beam grows tremulously far – Твій
слізний пломінь криє далина, functions: Sun of the
sleepless! Melancholy star! –Безсонних сонце, зірко
жалібна!
 An important aspect in comparing
translations is the correlation of parts
of speech.
Kochur mostly neglects it and uses
structures more typical of the
Ukrainian language:
adjective with adverb replaces noun
(remembered well → минуле)
 Conclusion
Looking at the translation by Hryhoriy
Kochur, it can be noted that he is not one of
the translators who like to type in
text new images that are not in the original.

Kochur used source oriented translation,

which which provides the maximum
possible approximation of the reader of the
translation to the original.

 СONCLUSION
despite some differences in
structure and rhythm of the original and
translation, Hryhoriy Kochur managed
to preserve the poetic potential
and the imagery of the original poems, to
convey the emotional mood, to find a
compromise between the exact
transfer of the content of the original and
stylistic requirements of the Ukrainian
language.
