ASSIGNMENT / SEATWORK#3
“LINEAR AND VOLUME THERMAL”
ADORADOR, EINHER B.
A. A block of wood floats in water with 5cm projecting above the water surface. When placed
in glycerin of specific gravity of 1.35, the block projects 7.5 cm above the liquid. Determine the
specific gravity of wood.
Diagram:
B. The pressure gage 6 m above the bottom of the tank containing a liquid reads 90 KPa;
another gage height 4 m reads 103 KPa. Determine the specific weight of the liquid.
Diagram:
Solution:
a. Let A= base area
h = height of the wood
W = BF1
(sp.gr.w) (ധwater) (Vt) = (ധwater) VD
sp.gr.w (Ah) = A(h-5)
sp.gr.w = h-5/h
W = BF2
(sp.gr.w) (ധwater) (Vt) = (ധwater) VD
sp.gr.w (Ah) = (1.35) (A)(h-7)
sp.gr.w = 1.35(h-7.5)/h
Equate (1) and (2):
h-5/h = 1.35(h-7.5)/h
h-5 = 1.35h - 10.125
H = 14.64cm.
Substitute in (1):
sp.gr.w = 14.64 - 5/14.64 = 0.658
b. Given data:
H1 = 6m
H2 = 4m
P1 = 90kPa
P2 = 103kPa
P1 = y (x)
P2 = y (x+ 2)
