FINAL TERM
ASSIGNMENT / SEATWORK#3
“LINEAR AND VOLUME THERMAL”

DATE OF PERFORMANCE: APRIL 11, 2022

DATE OF SUBMISSION: APRIL 17, 2022

ADORADOR, EINHER B.
1. Given the problem:

2. Find the change in volume of an aluminum sphere with an initial radius of 10 cm

when the sphere is heated from 0o C to 100o C. Coefficient of linear expansion of Al is
23x10-6/o C.

3. An aluminum cup of 100 cm3 capacity is completely filled with glycerin at 22 o C. How
much glycerin, if any, will spill out of the cup if the temperature of both the cup and the glycerin
is increased to 28 o C? The coefficient of volume expansion, β of glycerin is 5.1x10-4 /o C and Al α =
23x10-6 /o C.

Solution:

1. X2 = 12 – 120 =120 (1 + αΔT)2 – 120

Since the change in length is small, we may approximate (1+αΔT)2 by 1+2αΔT.
where the small term (αΔT)2 was neglected. Then,
X2 = 120 + 2120 αΔT - 120 =2120 αΔT
x = 10√2 αΔT = 3.77m/2√2(25x10-6/C°) (32 °C) = 7.5x10-2m

2. Since a volume is the product of three lengths the change in volume due to a
temperature change ΔT is given by ΔV=3αVΔT, where V is the original volume and
α is the coefficient of linear expansion. See Eq 18−11. Since V=(4π/3) R 3, where R is
the original radius of the sphere, then
ΔV=3α (4π/3 R3)
ΔT=(23×10−6/C°) (4π) (10 cm)3 (100°C) =29 cm3

The value for the coefficient of linear expansion is found in Table 18−2. The change in
volume can be expressed as ΔV/V=βΔT, where β=3α is the coefficient of volume
expansion. For aluminum, we have β=3α=36×10−6/C°

3. Given: the aluminum cup of 100cm3 capacity, and completely filled

with glycerin at 22°C
ΔVc = V3αAΔT
Substitute the givens
ΔVc = 100(cm3) x 3 x 23x10-6 (1/°C) x (28°C - 22°C)
= 0.0414cm3

The increase in the volume of the glycerin

ΔVg = VβgΔT
Substitute the givens
ΔVg = 100(cm3) x 5.1x10-4 (1/°C) x (28°C - 22°C)
= 0.306cm3

The spilled glycerin is

ΔV = ΔVg - ΔVC
= 0.306(cm3) - 0.0414(cm3)
= 0.2646 cm3
