ABSTRACT

This project focused on a social networking website. It has been noticed that
socializing aids in the improvement of department activities. The existing
problems of the schools' student portal site were identified, analyzed, and we
propose this computerized technique as a result of a series of interviews and
document examinations. This project will also include recommendations on
how to successfully implement the computerized procedure and overcome the
hurdles that would otherwise hinder the system from being properly
implemented. This documentation describes the methods we used to create and
implement a social network for ADUN, as well as its application.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The Admiralty University of Nigeria (ADUN) was established as a Public-
Private-Partnership (PPP) with the primary partners being Nigerian Navy
Holdings (a subsidiary organization of the Nigerian Navy) and Hellenic
Education Nigeria - (a private consultancy with international educators).
The University's objectives are multifaceted: to broaden the frontiers of
knowledge in various academic disciplines in Nigeria; to use university
education as a tool for development and the enhancement of human welfare;
to meet Nigeria's nation-building challenges; and to address the acute
shortage of personnel in various sectors of the Nigerian economy (ADUN,
2022).
With the numerous departments in the three (3) different faculties, there is a
growing need for involvement between students and faculty, and the
proposed approach attempts to meet that need. This social network's
objective is to encourage effective communication among university
members by providing subject topics and discussion platforms within those
topics. The technology will save time while also boosting the ease of
learning, performing research, and socializing with university members and
departments from various faculties.
This project's purpose is to build a social network platform for members of
this prestigious university while also promoting the university's image. "The
university's mission is to advance the frontiers of human knowledge by
providing learning, research, and service using cutting-edge technologies to
meet current educational demands in order to overcome the myriad of
challenges confronting humanity," according to the university's mission
statement (ADUN, 2022). This social network will be one of the tools used
to achieve that goal.

6
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE RESEARCH PROBLEM
These are some of the problems which our research will attempt to address:
i. Social Life: The need to improve social connections among students and
faculties, the lack of an engaging environment, and the need to increase
teamwork. We have observed and discovered an increased frequency of
students supporting each other when using technology in the classroom
through research. Many technology-based assignments incorporate other
factors, which necessitates students seeking assistance from their peers or
the teacher. Furthermore, when students are divided into small groups,
those who are more technologically skilled can assist their less
experienced peers (Walden University, 2022).
ii. Convenience: Because this social network is a website, it is available to
all employees and students whenever and wherever they want. The
network will be easier to access now that the school has installed
Wireless Fidelity connections throughout the campus.
iii. Organization and Access of Information: One of the scenarios for
which this system will provide a solution is the process by which school
officials must communicate vital information to members of the
Admiralty University community. Because people who do not own
Android or iOS devices will be unable to access the Luminary Leaders
group on WhatsApp. This university has placed computers and internet
connections in key positions throughout campus, making it very easy for
any student or staff member to surf the web and access information
posted on the internet. The proposed system will address information
inaccessibility.
iv. Study Group: Is this advancement detrimental to your students’ learning
or beneficial? According to the Pew Research Center, 92% of instructors
believe the internet has a significant impact on their capacity to access
content, tools, and materials (Walden University, 2022). As previously

7
said, when students are allocated to small groups, the more
technologically advanced students can assist their less experienced peers.
Because of the existence of this system, students will seek out and learn
from one another when they encounter challenges. Some students'
academic achievement is also hampered by a shortage of study groups on
campus. The suggested system allows prospective students to develop
forums unique to the subject issue, where they will engage with one
another.

1.3 AIM OF THE RESEARCH

We intend to develop solutions for designing and implementing this social
network in order to automate operations connected to ADUN community
engagement and social life. Boost socialis of the students and staff of the
institution, improve collaboration, create a more engaged environment,
incorporate a different learning style and, as a result, the educational level
by building an automated and web-based application for student online
communication and lowering anti-socialism.

1.4 SPECIFIC RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

This study is being conducted to achieve the following goals:
i. To develop better communication between students and staff.
ii. To enhance effective distribution of information.
iii. To raise the learning curve of students.
iv. To enable students find reading partners.

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Integrating technology into everyday life has resulted in dramatic changes in
all sectors of life, including interpersonal communication, the economics,
the entertainment industry, and education. Today, more than ever, students

8
are confronted with changes that affect not only the way they learn, but also
their daily lives. The same is true for organizations, schools, and businesses.
It is nearly impossible to overlook the enormous influence that this type of
endeavor could have on future generations of students. Children grow up
with laptops, tablets, numerous gadgets, and current digital systems, so they
are well prepared for educational modernization. The readiness of students
for technology in the classroom is wonderful news, because the digital age
presents new difficulties not only in education, but in all aspects of life. As a
result, it is critical that children learn to harness all of modern society's
potential while still in school (Allison Academy, 2022).
This social network acts as a link between students and the school. Students
will have access to important school information, as well as the opportunity
to express their ideas or proposals on the platform, either individually or
through the Student Representative Council. This project will also
encourage students to utilize the Internet for more than just playing video
games or browsing social media, but also to get information from the school
and their friends.
Given what has been said, the importance of developing and deploying an
online social network website for Admiralty University cannot be
overstated.

1.6 SCOPE OF THE RESEARCH

1.6.1 The proposed system is purely for Admiralty University’s use and
convenience.
1.6.2 For portability, the system will be adapted to computers phones, and
tablets.
1.6.3 It will be open to both ADUN community members and the general
public.

9
1.6.4 The system will be designed to be responsive for browsers running on
Windows, Android, and iOS.
1.6.5 It will run and be accessed by business actors at any time of the day i.e.
24/7

1.7 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

1.7.1 Time constraints – because there are only three months to finish the work
while still attending other classes in the same semester.
1.7.2 Lack of resources – paid hosting services, which require substantial sums
of money in order to gain more bandwidth to work with, and APIs, which
likewise require more money to use their full functionality. These
elements impede the implementation of certain system functions.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Detrimental: an unfavorable or harmful person or thing (Merriam-Webster,

2013).

Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi): Wi-Fi is a wireless local area network that transmits
and receives data across a few hundred feet using high frequency radio
transmissions (The Free Dictionary, 2022b).

Inaccessibility: The lack of availability when needed (The Free Dictionary,

2022a)

Modernization: The process of beginning to use the most recent methods,

ideas, equipment, and so on in order for something to become or appear more
modern (Cambridge Dictionary, 2022b).

Business Actors: Customers and partners are examples of business actors who
are not part of the actual organization. Humans, departments, and business units
are examples of business actors. A business actor can play one or more business
roles. A business actor's name should preferably be a noun. Business actors can

10
be specific people or organizations, such as "John Smith" or "ABC
Corporation," or they can be generic, such as "customer" or "supplier" (The
Open Group, 2019).

Convenience: the fact that something is appropriate for your needs and does not
interfere with your schedule or plans (Cambridge Dictionary, 2022a).

Hosting Services: In the broadest sense, hosted services are services delivered
over the Internet. In a hosted service environment, one computer is configured
to make some or all of its resources available to customers in exchange for a fee
(Techopedia, 2013).

Windows Operating System (OS): Microsoft's Windows is a desktop

operating system. Windows has been the most popular operating system for
personal computers for the past three decades (TechTerms, 2022b).

Android Operating System (OS): Google's Android is a mobile operating

system. Several smartphones and tablets use it. Sony Xperia, Samsung Galaxy,
and Google Nexus One are a few examples (TechTerms, 2022a).

iOS: iOS, formerly known as the iPhone OS, is the operating system that runs
on Apple's iPhone, iPad, and iPad Touch devices. Steve Jobs first mentioned it
at the 2007 WWDC when he introduced the iPhone. iOS is the second-most
popular mobile device platform, trailing only Android (Computer Hope, 2021).

APIs (Application Programming Interface): An API is a software interface

that allows two applications to interact with each other without the need for user
intervention is known as an application programming interface (API) (Alyssa
Walker, 2022).

Timestamp: The current time of an event that a computer records. Through

mechanisms, such as the Network Time Protocol, a computer maintains
accurate current time, calibrated to minute fractions of a second.

11
In order to facilitate understandability, the design should have the following features:
 It should use consistent and meaningful names for various design components.
 The design should be modular. The term modularity means that it should use a cleanly
decomposed set of modules.
 It should neatly arrange the modules in a hierarchy, e.g. in a tree-like diagram
