ME361 LAB REPORT

Experiment no: 3
Group no: B03
Name: Deep Drawing
Roll numbers: 200445, 200446, 200454, 200460, 200462, 200466
Date & Day experiment was conducted on: 11/08/2022, Thursday
Date of submission of report: 18/08/2022, Thursday

Objective:

To deep draw a cup, and measure: forming forces, and linear, area, and
volumetric strains.

Answers to questions asked in the report:

1. Calculations:
For diameter=90mm and thickness=0.6mm
∆𝑙 5.195−4.784
Linear strain = 𝑙
= 4.784
= 0. 086
∆𝐴 15.244−22.887
Area strain = 𝐴
= 22.887
=− 0. 334
Volumetric strain:
Initial volume= 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑐𝑘𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠 × 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 = 0. 6 × 22. 887 = 13. 732 𝑚𝑚3
Final volume =
𝑛𝑒𝑤 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑐𝑘𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠 × 𝑛𝑒𝑤 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 = 0. 59 × 15. 244 = 8. 994 𝑚𝑚3
∆𝑣 8.994−13.732
Volumetric strain = 𝑉
= 13.732
=− 0. 345

𝑅 µ𝐹ℎ (σ𝑦𝑡) . 𝑡
σz=[2𝐾𝑙𝑛( 𝑅𝑑 ) + π𝑅𝑡
]𝑒µθ + 4(𝑟𝑛)
45 0.1*130 π 480*0.6
σz=[2(240)𝑙𝑛( 35.6 ) + π*45*0.6
]𝑒 20 + 4*6.3
= 143.01N/mm2

Theoretical forming force = σz2π𝑟pt

= 143. 01 × 2 × π × 29 × 0. 6 = 15635 N
